Overview

Regirock is as tough as rocks - which also means that it has 5 weaknesses, the most in the game among all single types and tied with Ice. As such, a plethora Pokemon can manage the 4-man run. However, keep in mind that the odds of having to relobby are pretty high due to Regirock's bulk, so be ready to get back into the fight ASAP.

It's work noting that the 3-player run is very possible, and even a duo given a perfect situation in theory, but this guide will focus on the 4-player run primarily.

Approach

Team composition

  • Regirock has a number of powerful counter-types, but the primary picks are Ground, Water, Fighting, Steel, and Grass.
    • Ground is the overall strongest counter-type, boasting strong counters with a mix of high damage output and great survivability.
    • Water is great as well, though many of its top counter options are harder to obtain, and they tend to have fewer resistances.
    • Fighting is a strong all-around option, with resistances to Regirock's STAB moves.
    • Steel has a small number of outstanding counters, but a lack of strong Mega Evolutions to round the type out.
    • Grass has good resistances, but the only real stand-outs are Mega Sceptile and Kartana. Most other Grass Types fall off quite a bit in comparison.

Battling strategy

  • Re-entering is very likely to be necessary; standard lineups shouldn’t need >1 re-entry

  • Dodging is mostly unnecessary but may help, especially against Zap Cannon for some counters. Just make sure you don't do it so often that you eat into your DPS.

Note: "Good" movesets are not necessarily viable at the level indicated.

Best Raid Boss Counters

Supreme Mega Counters

Primal Groudon Primal Groudon
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The real titan of this raid, Primal Groudon boasts a huge mix of DPS and TDO that crushes the opposition and dwarfs the competition. That said, its Fire sub-typing does it no favors here, removing Ground's resistance to Rock Type attacks. Still, Primal Groudon is still the top pick here regardless of the situation.

  • Resistances: Zap Cannon (2x)
  • Weaknesses:  None
Primal_Kyogre Primal Kyogre
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The master of Water Types, Primal Kyogre has tremendous power behind it that rivals Primal Groudon, but its resistance set is substantially worse, and the list of top Water Types that it can boost is a bit shorter than the top Ground Type list.

  • Strengths: None
  • Weaknesses: Zap Cannon
Mega Sceptile Mega Sceptile
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The top Grass Type DPS option among Mega Evolutions, Mega Sceptile also double-resists Zap Cannon and has decent average TDO as a direct result. It also boosts Kartana while on the field, giving it added utility.

  • Strengths: Zap Cannon (2x)
  • Weaknesses: None
Mega Blaziken Mega Blaziken
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Mega Blaziken is powerful, but it falls short of Mega Sceptile for DPS, and far behind Primal Groudon for TDO. Honestly, its biggest draw for this raid is the fact that it boosts Fighting Type Pokemon while on the field, which is one of the strongest types for countering Regirock.

  • Strengths: None
  • Weaknesses: None

Good Mega Evolution Counters

Mega Swampert Mega Swampert
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The TDO option among the Hoenn Starter Mega Evolutions, Mega Swampert resists Rock Type movesets and Zap Cannon, which allows it to power through most of what Regirock can throw at it. It's behind Primal Kyogre, but it's still a solid backup.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge, Zap Cannon
  • Weaknesses: None
Mega Garchomp Mega Garchomp
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While it is definitely in the shadow of Primal Groudon, Mega Garchomp is still very much capable of putting up fantastic numbers while lasting for a very long time. If you're waiting for your Groudon's Primal Reversion to become cheaper to use or outright lack it, then Mega Garchomp is very much worthy of consideration.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge, Zap Cannon (3x)
  • Weaknesses: None
Mega Heracross Mega Heracross
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

This big bug works as a Fighting Type Mega Evolution, though it's behind Mega Blaziken on that front. It's good, but not outstanding.

  • Strengths: Rock Smash, Focus Blast
  • Weaknesses: None
Mega Blastoise Mega Blastoise
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A bit vanilla as a Water Type, and objectively worse than Mega Swampert, but still a solid option for this raid.

  • Strengths: None
  • Weaknesses: Zap Cannon
Mega Venu Mega Venusaur
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A good TDO option with solid average performance. While weaker than Mega Sceptile, its extra time on the field aided by its resistance to Fighting Type movesets allows it to spread around its Grass Type Mega Boost for a longer period of time, which can be devastating when multiple players are utilizing Kartana at the same time. On that note, its niche sort of goes out the window against Zap Cannon, as Mega Sceptile beats it on all metrics there.

  • Strengths: Rock Smash, Focus Blast, Zap Cannon
  • Weaknesses: None
Mega Lopunny Mega Lopunny
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Another Fighting Type booster, but it's weak to Fighting Type moves itself. Mega Blaziken is better, but Mega Lopunny is an okay backup.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge
  • Weaknesses: Rock Smash, Focus Blast
Mega Scizor Mega Scizor
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Definitely the weakest option on this list, it's only here by virtue of its ability to boost Shadow Metagross while on the field.

  • Strengths: Lock On
  • Weaknesses: None

Supreme Counters

ShadowMetagross Shadow Metagross
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The absolute top DPS option for this raid, beating out even the Mega Evolutions, Shadow Metagross is an oppressive force that can crush Regirock. If you're lucky enough to have a few of this monster raised, then definitely bring it along.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Lock-On, Stone Edge
  • Weaknesses: None
Shadow Groudon Shadow Groudon
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Hard-hitting and backed up by great TDO, few Pokemon among the non-Mega options for this raid can hope to compete with Shadow Groudon. While currently a rare Pokemon, Shadow Groudon is always a a top pick that crushes the competition.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge, Zap Cannon (2x)
  • Weaknesses: None
Shadow_Kyogre Shadow Kyogre
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Master of the non-Mega Water Types, Shadow Kyogre sports high DPS and TDO alike that makes it a great choice regardless of the situation... just watch out for Zap Cannon.

  • Strengths: None
  • Weaknesses: Zap Cannon
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While a bit glassy, Kartana sports the highest non-Shadow/Mega DPS for this raid. It's a powerful option that that will cause huge damage if put in alongside Mega Sceptile or Mega Venusaur.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Lock-On, Stone Edge, Zap Cannon
  • Weaknesses: Rock Smash, Focus Blast
Terrakion Terrakion
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The prime representative for the Fighting Type meta, Terrakion has crushingly strong damage and is objectively great for this raid. Just remember that it's also weak to Regirock's Fighting Type moves.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Lock-On, Stone Edge
  • Weaknesses: Rock Smash, Focus Blast
Shadow Machamp Shadow Machamp
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While not quite on a par with Terrakion, Shadow Machamp shows up with its own advantage by not taking additional damage from Fighting Type moves. In all fairness, the two are largely interchangeable.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge
  • Weaknesses: None
shadow_excadrill Shadow Excadrill
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Excadrill is a mixed bag here. It had great performance against select movesets, but others can also drop it very quickly. Regardless, it's a very good counter.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw (2x), Lock On, Stone Edge (2x), Zap Cannon (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Rock Smash, Focus Blast

Good Counters

ShadowSwampert Shadow Swampert
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While generally pretty glassy, Shadow Swampert has the advantage of resisting Rock and Electric Type moves in this raid, giving it a strong overall performance.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge, Zap Cannon
  • Weaknesses: None
Landorus (Therian Forme) Landorus (Therian Forme)
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A power-house Ground Type attacker, Landorus - Therian can put in great numbers here.

  • Strengths: Rock Smash, Focus Blast, Zap Cannon
  • Weaknesses: None
Pokemon GO Shaymin Sky Forme Shaymin (Sky Forme)
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A strong Grass Type (now that Niantic has fixed the Magical Leaf issue), though it does not appreciate Regirock's Rock Type attacks.

  • Strengths: Rock Smash, Focus Blast
  • Weaknesses: Rock Throw, Stone Edge
ShadowSwine Shadow Mamoswine
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While best known for its Ice Type moveset, Shadow Mamoswine actually has a surprisingly solid showing sporting its Ground Type moveset here. And that same Ground typing allows it to double-resist Zap Cannon and lose its Ice Type weakness to Rock Type moves. Just watch out for Fighting Type movesets!

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Rock Smash, Stone Edge, Focus Blast
  • Weaknesses: Zap Cannon (2x)
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A solid little guy, Keldeo can definitely put the hurt on Regirock. Just watch out for Zap Cannon!

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge
  • Weaknesses: Zap Cannon
Shadow Hariyama Shadow Hariyama
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Baby Shadow Machamp.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge
  • Weaknesses: None
Metagross Metagross
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Shadow Metagross definitely steals the spotlight for this raid, but the classic variant is definitely worth using as well.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Lock-On, Stone Edge
  • Weaknesses: None
Shadow-Golurk Shadow Golurk
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Often overlooked, Shadow Golurk is actually one of this game's better Ground Types, and it works well in this raid. This thing actually resists Regirock's entire moveset, and many of those resistances are double. While its DPS is a tad bit low, its overall performance makes it an outstanding option regardless of the situation.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Rock Smash (2x), Lock-On (2x), Stone Edge, Focus Blast (2x), Zap Cannon (2x)
  • Weaknesses:
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The classic "true" Water Type, Kyogre only needs to beware of Zap Cannon to do well.

  • Strengths: None
  • Weaknesses: Zap Cannon
ShadowVenusaur Shadow Venusaur
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A great filler if facing down Fighting Type movesets.

  • Strengths: Rock Smash, Focus Blast, Zap Cannon
  • Weaknesses: None
shadow-tangrowth Shadow Tangrowth
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

The true vanilla Grass Type, Shadow Tangrowth is a solid option overall.

  • Strengths: Zap Cannon
  • Weaknesses: None
ShadowTorterra Shadow Torterra
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While Torterra's Ground sub-typing is generally a hinderance to its average performance, here it's a huge boon as it provides a resistance to Rock Type movesets and a double-resistance to Zap Cannon.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge, Zap Cannon (3x)
  • Weaknesses: None
Conkeldurr Conkeldurr
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Poor Conkeldurr was once hyped up as the would-be king of Fighting Types, but it never got its chance to shine. Well, it's good here, at least.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Rock Smash
  • Weaknesses: None
Xurkitree Xurkitree
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Turns out that having a high enough attack stat and a good coverage move can allow a Pokemon to actually be decent in raids weak to said coverage move. Who knew?

  • Strengths: Zap Cannon
  • Weaknesses: None

Glass Counters

Shadow Feraligatr Shadow Feraligatr
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating
  • Strengths: None
  • Weaknesses: Zap Cannon
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Lucario doesn't have the best bulk and is weak to Fighting Type movesets, so on average it won't last super long. However, it also double-resists Rock Type moves, so it situationally has stellar performance.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw (2x), Lock On, Stone Edge (2x)
  • Weaknesses: Rock Smash, Focus Blast
ShadowGyarados Shadow Gyarados
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A good option if you want to counter Fighting Type movesets, a bad option for any other moveset.

  • Strengths: Rock Smash, Focus Blast
  • Weaknesses: Rock Throw, Stone Edge, Zap Cannon (2x)
Pheromosa Pheromosa
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Bug hit hard, bug go squish.

  • Strengths: Rock Smash, Focus Blast
  • Weaknesses: None
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

Crabhammer go brrrr....

  • Strengths: None
  • Weaknesses: Zap Cannon

Tank Counters

Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

A solid TDO option, but generally behind Garchomp.

  • Strengths: Zap Cannon (2x)
  • Weaknesses: None
Garchomp Garchomp
Fast MoveCharge MoveRating

While a bit low on DPS, Garchomp resists Rock Type movesets and triple resists Zap Cannon, so it's worth considering if your team's TDO is low.

  • Strengths: Rock Throw, Stone Edge, Zap Cannon (3x)
  • Weaknesses: None
