Trolled by the Karp
First a little background to understand my question
I was out catching yesterday and I hatched a 124 CP magikarp, and knowing that max for level 20 is 125, evolved it thinking it was 98, (I dont use those iv calculator apps on phones, personal choice) so i evolved it, and when i got home, plugged everything into this iv calc, and it wasn't 98, and right after that...i caught a perfect karp that was level 1 after draining my candies evolving the previous.
Im currently walking a dragonite in preparation for Groudon and Rayquaza's return, in addition to misc. dragon useful things, and my dilemma is should i switch over to walking a magikarp or gyarados to get that perfect one up in the levels to be battle ready for groudon (and possibly rayquaza with tm'd outrage), or keep walking the dragonite.

i always check the iv's from appraisals, and the level 1 karp had best stats everything, its e perfect iv one, and i use the gamepress IV calculator, i dont like using those ones on phone because i feel it takes away a lot from the enjoyment of getting a good IV pokemon,
i pluggest the stts from that hatched on in on here and spat out a 93, not bad, but still wish i hadn't evolved it.
Always appraise everything you catch and run it through IV calculators to avoid having this happen. As glugmaster said 125 may not even be perfect because Magikarp's base stats are so low.
Your best bet is to go Magikarp hunting for the remainder of this event. Powering up from level 1 to 30 costs 126 candy, plus the 400 it'll take to evolve it again. I don't know how much you walk but you could be stuck with it for a long time if you don't try to catch more along the way.
What's your water/grass scene look like? Against Groudon those would probably suit you better from a DPS standpoint than Dragonite would.
Moves > IV. Define "no good" for Alolan Eggie, I imagine as long as it has BS/SB it should do well against MS/EQ and MS/SB variants of Groudon. FP Venusaur goes without saying. Kyogres that are even modestly powered up (maybe level 25?) can outperform a Vaporeon (assuming they have dual water. Leave them on the bench if they have Blizzard or Thunder). Gyarados is still worth it if you lack rare candies, especially against Groudon thanks to ground immunity.
Keep Walrein on the bench. Even with ideal moves it doesn't have the DPS against Groudon to be worth the consideration.
MetagrossMaxis,
I wouldn't worry about having powered up a 93% Gyarados. If Groudon comes after Kyogre, you'll want a team of at least 6 strong water pokemon. Hopefully you have a few Kyogre worth powering up. Gyarados is a weaker, sometimes tankier version of Kyogre (assuming both have the right moves), Gyarados does less DPS, but with double resistance to ground and grass, will take more damage than Kyogre.
Don't think in terms of one perfect, think in terms of the best possible team of six attackers. Does your 93% Gyarados have a place on that team? If so, not a waste to power him up.
And spend much time catching fish. In my biome, Karp are everywhere. Caught a 100% level 30 Karp last week, haven't evolved it yet, and might not for a while. (Might save it for Mega forms, if you have to start from the base form, we don't know how that will work, and I can always evolve it later.) I have 4 great Kyogre, led by a 100%, and two strong Gyarados, giving me a fine team to take on Groudon. And I have over 1600 Karp candy, between the gen 1 event and the water event. If you work at it, you can easily get enough candy to evolve the perfect and power it up. Just know that the next few days are the end of the window for easy Karp candy (until they open another one).
Thank you, i haven't raided groudon or rayquaza they came out when i started playing and didnt get into raiding consistently until a month or so ago, to my teams are pretty limited, both in terms of mon and movesets. Looking at them i have 2 hydropump/waterfall gyrados, as well as 3 of my four kyogre, the 4th has blizzard, so i think i have groudon covered, i may focus dragonite to get soemthign to counter rayquaza
Dragonite is 8th against Groudon at level 30. Gyarados is second.
Dragonite is 4th against Rayquaza. Gyarados with full dragon moves is 16th.
So if you are dead set on using only one pokémon against both of them, Dragonite is your pick. Otherwise, get one generalist and one specialist and perform better in both cases.
Since it is a perfect Karp I would gradually power it up, but not walk it. The water event was going for a long time where Karp was everywhere and walking Karp in general certainly isn't worth it.
Looking at my spreadsheet, a 124cp Magikarp is guaranteed to have 15 attack IV. At the lowest end, it could be 15a/12d/15s (93%). That is fine. Maybe you will need to power up a few more times to hit a bulkpoint, if you bother to even check that kind of thing. Comparing Gyarados, 15a/12d/15s is about 20cp less than a perfect 15/15/15.
Only reason I have recently bothered switching buddy for Magikarp candy was during adventure week when research for "Earn 5 candy walking with buddy" was very common. I would finish earning my current candy, switch to a Gyarados to finish the research in 1 km, then switch back to whatever I was walking before.
