Is it better to power up a Magikarp or Gyarados...

or does it matter?

I caught 3 shinykarp during the event and have already evolved one to a CP 2535 shiny gyarados (shinydos?); it has dragon tail and crunch. I caught the karp at CP 124, IV 58% (12/14/0) and powered it up as far as my limited stardust allowed before evolving it.

I have two more shinykarp, which I caught at CP 20 (73%) and CP 10 (38%) and plan to eventually evolve as magikarp aren't rare in this area. But what is the best way to do that - power them up first and then evolve, or evolve and power up the gyarados? Does it make any difference regarding dust and candy requirements? Any thoughts?

P.S. They must be rare as I have not seen another one in a local gym yet, so I'm planning to evolve all of them regardless of IVs.

Thanks for any advice!

if you plan on powering them all up, then the order doesn't matter, but generally the rule of thumb is evolve first to see the moveset then power up if the moveset is favorable.

It will make no difference to the cost or the result.

The general practice is to evolve first, and then you may decide what order to power up based on moveset or investment requirements.

3 Shiny's??? None here... :-(
What city are you located in.?

The first one was caught in Tallahassee, FL in a grocery store parking lot on 3/26. The other two were caught in a local park in a town 25 miles from there on 3/27 and 3/28.

I know I was very lucky.

Hope you get one soon!

In term of dust and candy, it doesn't matter whether you evolve then power up or power up then evolve.

I can't believe that some people still ask this question !

I'm confused... I thought this is a Q&A board? If this question offends you, just ignore it.

There's no need to be offensive. You don't need to read the question if it offends you, let alone provide an unhelpful answer.

To OP: its always better to evolve first: even if you intend powering both up regardless of the moves, you will at least then know which one to focus dust on initially. Also, while karp are useless for actually attacking with, an evolved karp with good moves is already a really useful attacker/prestiger, so you might as well start enjoying using your shiny as well as putting it in gyms to show off.

I'm assuming you think evolve first, which is my opinion. I "think" the question often gets asked, although that may not necessarily be the case in this instance, because there's a certain amount of general advice about Pokemon Go that floats around the web, some of it since the game started, with the suggestion that you can start power up an unevolved mon, or the evolved mon, and it doesn't matter which way you jump. It's confusing because it's true, but it too often doesn't discuss the end product, which will includes moveset etc.

Why? This is a solid question. Much better than retarded threads about grammatical error, music preference, and hypothetical what-if-Blissey-was-fairy kind of questions.

It makes absolutely no difference in resource cost. Both methods also result in the same final CP.

However, it is STRONGLY suggested that you evolve it first, then have a look at the resulting move set, before further investing (if at all).

Thanks for all the helpful answers, it really wasn't clear to me.

I will first power up my gyarados (now level 30) and then evolve another shinykarp. It'll be a while though, as magikarp aren't THAT common :)
