Help for desperate player

Hi there,

I started to play the game in July and Growlithes have always been scarce where I live. In 6 months, I managed to hatch 6 of them and evolve 11 of them.

My concern here is that ALL of them got Bite/Bulldoze! 11 Arcanines with this terrible moveset... I'm totally discouraged because I don't want to waste so much time and get a 12th, 13th one with this moveset.

So the question is: are movesets really random? I really want to have a nice Arcanine but after 11 crappy one... don't know what to think.

Thanks in advance for any inputs/help.

Cheers,

It's really random but you just keep getting the short end of the stick

Totally random. My first three came with bite bulldoze, but thankfully my fourth came with FF/F (5th went back to Bulldoze though...)

11 in a row is unlucky!

The chance to evolve 11 PKM and get the same moveset every time is quite low - (1/6)^10 = 1 in 60 Millions! So, it is hard to believe it happened. Can i see a screen-shot please?

It is the propability range of a main win in lottery - it is very rare, but it happens. It does not make me doubt the theory about randomly equal distributed movesets.

And if you fix the moveset in advance (such as the worst moveset), the chance is (1/6)^11 = 1 in 363 million. It's like fixing a number in roulette and then winning with that number 5 times in a row, it is just beyond belief.

36 Arcanine and never had FF as a quick move. Not a problem any more but I really wanted a dbl fire Arcanine at one stage.

10 Snorlax and not a single Body Slam.

RNG can be cruel

36? Way less than 11 Bite/Bulldoze in a row.

36 Arcanine and never had FF as a quick move.

(1/2)^36 makes one in 68 Billion, assuming, it happend in a row. This is even harder to believe than the original story....
Maybe there is indeed an issue with RNG and Arcanine? I start to doubt the evenly random moveset distribution.

OK...I need to admit an error.
I have indeed had FF as a fast move, with FT or Bulldoze, BUT "never the FF as a quick move with FB"
This will change things considerably.

It was not my intention to lead anyone astray...just wanted to point out RNG can appear less random in a smaller sample.

Ok, makes it just bad luck, 36 times not the wanted one in of six movesets, makes (5/6)^36 = 1 / 709, really bad luck anyway, but possible.

No one will check this thread probably now...but for the record number 37 was FF/FB during an evolve session.

RNG comes through again

Nice, congrats ! Wish me luck for my next evolve (in a month or so maybe) ;-)

Most definitley....best of luck with each and every evolve

Bite is actually better than Fire Fang for attack.

Yes...you are correct. Very good.
That is why in my post I said
"Not a problem any more but I really wanted a dbl fire Arcanine at one stage."

No one ever said it was 'better' I just said at one stage I wanted a mon with that combo.

Are you a cheater? It is almost impossible to get this. Although it is possible, it is only 1/6^11 chance. You may just having an extremely "good luck" at this. Take it easy! It is still good against other fire-type Pokémon.

The movesets are completly random, each has 1/6 chance.

Since there is a nest, I suggest you to evolve another one with a high IV: if you try, you may have it; if you don't try, you will get nothing. If the nest is gone, wait for the re-roll system to come out.

A cheater? Certainly not... I'm just an average level 28 player and have not completed my Pokedex yet.

I play with my daughter most of the time and since Arcanine is her favourite one...

My bad, all of them came with Bulldoze but 3 got Fire Fang. Sorry for my english it's not my mother language.

This makes the case much more believable. You are just very unlucky with arcanine anyway.

"Have always been scarce here, managed to evolve 11 of them"

That's almost 2 a month, I'd be happy to have one total. :(

I travel for my work so I manage to find nest sometimes (+ 3 hatched during Halloween event, i think it gave more candies).

Do you think that the time or place you evolve a Pokemon can influence the moveset?

I mean I always do it with my daughter when she comes back from school (5pm). I really try to figure out if anything could have an impact...

Do you think that the time or place you evolve a Pokemon can influence the moveset?

There was done some research, but as far as i know until now no one could reject the assumption of random distributions.

It is known, that the same pokemon cought by two players always has same IVs and moveset. Anyway, after evolution of these two almost identical pkm, movesets can differ. So i strongly doubt that the place, where growlithe was found can have an influence on moveset of arcanine.

I really try to figure out if anything could have an impact

You will not be able to do this alone. You will have to design an experiment, then get many players who participate, and then evaluate mathematical correctly. Silph road does this from time to time, and, as far as i know, they did not find any strange issues to moveset distribution until now.

Thank you Bruno. But I was talking about the place where you press the "evolve" button (and maybe the time of the day?).

I already changed my original posting, please read again. :-)

Ok! So thank you for this. I think I have no other option than trying to get another one. I'll let you know ;-)

Hopefully, you will succeed this time!

By the way: My doughters like Ponita / Unicorn most. :-)
And the younger one is really proud to have cought a pikachu with x-mas-hat.

Just wanted to comment here that simulations have been done regarding Bite vs. Fire Fang when attacking with Arcanine, and in every relevant matchup in the current meta (yes, even Exeggutor) Bite edges out Fire Fang because of the massive increase in energy generation allowing the use of more powerful charge attacks.

It shocks me that people still think Fire Fang is optimal on attack. Bite/FB and Bite/FT are both better DPS than Fang/FB. And that's not even taking into account the fact that FT edges out FB in many situations because of the energy waste in waiting to unleash FB in most real-world battle scenarios. FB is pretty much only the superior charge move if you're not dodging.

Who STILL thinks Bite is better than FF?

To 'still' think that, we would need to have believed it at some point in the past.

lots of people think this, and it's posted on the tier list pages on this very site for gym attackers. In addition, the OP, and other posters, hinted they were upset about getting movesets with Bite.

I'm not complaining with Bite, I just feel desperate to have Bulldoze on all the Growlithe I evolved... 11 is huge no?

If I could get any other moveset (excluding Bulldoze), I'd be happy with that.

And yes, I think sometimes the game screws you with movesets. I know people say that it's all about randomness, but I don't understand why my 3 Venusaur have Razor Leaf/Petal Blizzard, my 2 Blastoise Water Gun/Flash Cannon, my 11 Arcanines Bulldoze and I could give some more examples.

I'm not complaining, I'm just wondering why and I really start to doubt about the fact it's totally random ;-)

This is pretty normal. Niantic picks one kind of Pokémon for some players, and lock the evolution move set into something or out of something. In this case just give up on the fire dogs.
