Does each pokemon you place in a gym get you 50 coins per day or do you just get 50 coins back when the pokemon stays in the gym for over 6 hours?
Like if I have 10 mons in a gyms but none of them come back to me today, do I get no coins for that day? Or do I get them later when they come back? Has anyone tested this?

From what I've seen the first pokemon to return home in a day brings back 50 coins, then any other pokemon returning doesn't bring back anything. If you don't lose a gym on a specific day then you won't get any coins on that day.
I'm not sure if this is bugged right now, since it clearly isn't the 1 coin per hour defending formula suggested by Niantic before the release. It also seems that the coin per day limit has been reduced to 50 which is really annoying since coins are more useful than ever with raids in the game now.
I had 7 pokemon return to me this morning, and still only got 50 coins, so the system as it stands seems to undermine the value of holding a lot of gyms.
Will depend on how fast the gyms turn over in your area - there's a strip mall across the street from my work with 4 gyms that previously turned over every few days or so; my strategy is to get at least a few in there, as well as sprinkle a few other defenders in other gyms. Then cross your fingers that at least some get kicked out after a minimum of 500 total minutes.... but this is a moving target and it'll take a while for all of us to figure out best way to work this.
20 seconds before my exact same comment.
So now spoofers and shavers have even more power in this game.
Spoofers just run over and give berries now, dont even have to fight to keep the prestige up so their time to keep a gym goes down DRASTICALLY.
Shavers now have the best strat available.
And the rest of us just hope for the best after putting in tons of time getting ourselves a spot.
This rework has actually completely ruined that part of the game. Going to wait a month so they can fix it I guess? Going back to just collector status, no longer worried about gyms. Sux and frustrating.
Getting decent coin is also easier than ever. 50 coins per day are now reached by more players than ever before. It's just that the reward threshold is low, not continual, and out of your control. It does not stimulate a strong defense presence.
Before the gym change I had to be really lucky to get more than 30 coins per day, since other gyms were filled up with 30-60 minutes worth of solo fighting. Now I can relax, but it does not feel great.
