Just evolved a Cloyster IS/AB, i notice that aurora beam is in every way inferior to avalanche (it does less damage, it has longer cooldown, it has a later dodgewindow, both are 2 bar moves)

Why does Niantic makes 2 moves of same type off which one is superior to the other?

Should i keep this cloyster for possible later move update?

Are there other examples of moves of same type of equal bars that are in every way superior/inferior?

Check out Grass Knot vs Power Whip.
Power whip was made legacy on Tangela and replaced with Grass Knot.
That is the best example I can find.

At this moment PW is slightly better than GK, but the problem is that at this moment moves are changed every few months, so if you have both versions you have to keep both to be certain on having the best move.

Power Whip is only arguably better than Grass Knot because of its earlier yellow flash.

I think you are talking about Energy Ball, not Grass Knot.

The game is eleven months old and the moves are changed two times now, no reason to assume they 'll stop doing that. I suppose with every new generation they introduce also new moves and change the old ones (but who knows really)

Why? Because .45 seconds earlier with the flash?
I am not sure I have ever seen a Tangela in a gym on defence.

Yes, Power Whip deals its damage earlier in the window, making it a better finishing move than Grass Knot.

It's more like Energy Ball vs Power Whip.

Thunderbolt - Wild Charge
Brick Break - Low Sweep
Submission - Dynamic Punch
Overheat - Fireblast
Ice Beam - Aurora beam
Psychic - Future sight
Rock Slide - Rock Thomb
Zen headbutt - extrasensory

And probably a few more. But not many of this moves are both accessable for the same pokemon, maybe the reason is to make a different power level for them. There are also a lot of moves that deal sligthly less damage but are also slightly faster.
I should keep it, moveset can change, or not if you have enough candy and candidates for evolving.

Brick Break - Low Sweep
Overheat - FireblastRock
Slide - Rock Thomb

are good examples of unbalanced charge moves, on the others the cool down is higher or dodge window is later on the higher damage move.

But i will keep my cloyster for now, i notice cloyster takes up lots of places on my pokemon stack because it has only moves of its own typing (water/ice).

There are usually better moves than ice moves without advanced calculations:
Aurora Beam: Thunderbolt
Avalanche: Power Whip
Frost Breath: Counter
Ice Beam: Avalanche
Ice Shard: Bubble
Icy Wind: Crunch
Ice Punch – Dragon Claw

Exceptions:
Blizzard, Powder Snow

More disappointing is that the animation does not remind one of aurora at all. It should come out of the sky and have red and green color.
