We are currently working to update our Pokemon pages but in the meantime, we thought a guide to evolution requirements in Generation 2 would be helpful. This generation has introduced a number of evolution mechanics that we would like to cover.
Five new evolution items were added to the game. These items drop at very low rates from Pokestops and are used to evolve the following Pokemon. Evolving these Pokemon also requires candy.
Base Form | Evolution | Item | Candy |
---|---|---|---|
Gloom | Bellossom | Sun Stone | 100 |
Poliwhirl | Politoed | King's Rock | 100 |
Slowpoke | Slowking | King's Rock | 50 |
Onix | Steelix | Metal Coat | 50 |
Seadra | Kingdra | Dragon Scale | 100 |
Scyther | Scizor | Metal Coat | 50 |
Porygon | Porygon2 | Upgrade | 50 |
Sunkern | Sunflora | Sun Stone | 50 |
Other than the evolutions involving items, there were also several other cross generation evolutions:
Base Form | Evolution | Candy Required |
---|---|---|
Golbat | Crobat | 100 Candy |
Chansey | Blissey | 50 Candy |
There are also two unique cross generation evolutions that warrant special attention:
- Tyrogue - Tyrogue can be hatched from 5K eggs. When evolving if its HP is its highest IV, it will evolve into Hitmontop. If its Attack is its highest IV, it will evolve into Hitmonlee. Finally, if its Defense is its highest IV, it will evolve into Hitmonchan. You can find out which IV is the highest from the appraise function. While we have not conducted extensive testing, we believe that when two IVs are equal, there is equal probability of both evoltuions.
- Eevee - After walking with Eevee as your buddy for 10km, evolving Eevee while it is still your buddy will turn it into Espeon during the day and Umbreon during the night*. Alternative, you can name your Eevee "Sakura" to evolve it into Espeon without making it your buddy or "Tamao" to evolve it to Umbreon. This name trick only works once.
* Technically, you must have received 2 candies while Eevee is your buddy. This will matter if you constantly switch buddies, are at the daily distance limit and during events.
The following is a table of all evolutions not covered above that were introduced with the generation 2 update. These only involve using candy.
