How do cooldowns work

Hey guys. The charge move mechanics have 2 elements that i cant seem to completely understand: cooldown and time between text and yellow flash. The cooldown of a charge move prevents every kind of action possible while its happening like quick moves, dodge and switch pokemons or just the charge move itself? Also whats the correlation between cooldown and the time that goes from move text to yellow flash? What im inclined to think is that when i cast a move the order of events is as follows ->timecast that appears under the hp bar -> time between combat text and yellow flash -> attack happens -> cooldown begins. Is this correct?

No, cooldown include:

Move text appeared -> The time before yellow flash -> Yellow flash appeared -> Yellow flash disappear + Defender received damage -> (Dodge bug happened) -> The rest time of the move cooldown -> (Dodge bug fixed) -> (An 1.5–2.5 seconds additional cooldown if used by a gym defender)

Attacker here: the move user
Defender here: the move receiver

I take it to mean...(someone correct me if I am wrong)

Cooldown is the time it takes to perform the move in total.
That is, from the time you start pressing the move, the time it takes to complete it, the attack itself, and including a break before you can initiate the next move.

This is why the dps for a charge move is simply cooldown/damage.

The attack animation (yellow flash) will come at some point during the 'cooldown' period, and varies for each move.
For example, HyperBeam comes very late in a long cooldown, but BodySlam arrives very early in a shorter cooldown. For Bite, it is very early in a very fast cooldown.

TL/DR Cooldown is the amount of time that you are unable to do anything else while you successfully attack using any specific move

IMO, "cooldown" is a bit of misnomer. It is the full time that it takes to use a move. Some places call it "duration", which is a better description.

IMO, "cooldown" would be a more fitting term for the random 1.5s-2.5s pause in between gym defender attacks. I don't think there is an widely used term for that pause.

On the charge move page, the "time" column on the right is probably either, not sure, the time that the yellow flash happens or the .7s after the flash when the damage happens.

The warning text for defender charge moves, in my experience is completely unreliable. Sometimes it appears at the beginning of a charge move, other times long after the damage and maybe even after the defender has used its next quick move.

I agree in every point u made. Cooldown is a little bit of a misnomer and would fit time in between attacks much better. In the page u linked the value that is shown in the "duration" column is defined as "cooldown" in other pages like if we click on a specific move to see more details like u said so i guess multiple naming could have confused me a little bit. "Duration" is indeed more fitting imo too. And from what ive learn the time parameter is included in the "duration/cooldown" value and consist of a time cast, a reaction window (texts and flashes) and the damge. Adding that small break after everything happened and where u cant do anything to the time value makes the "duration" or the "cooldown" of a move. That way i can maybe understand the cooldown naming. In addition to that i went to check the quick move page and ironically the "time" parameter is described at the top of the page as the move duration and is referred to as "cooldown" if we click on a specific move and go to the details page so there is a mishmash of meaning between the words time, duration and cooldown lool

And y the warning text is kinda unreliable. It might be lag or lack of skill but i asked this question here because while battling i couldnt get to any specific conclusion about times and cooldowns properly since sometimes events seemed switched or unsynchronized like u described.
