Overview
Mega Charizard X has not translated extremely well into Pokemon Go when compared to other Mega Evolutions, and that has left it as somewhat awkward as both a Pokemon to use and to fight against. Given its ideal counters, it can be a threatening raid due to the pervasive power of Dragon Claw, or it can be far easier if facing Fire Blast and Fire Spin. In this regard, the difficulty of this raid hinges heavily on the moveset that it packs.
Approach
Team composition
- Mega Charizard X is weak to Dragon, Rock, and Ground
- Dragon tends to stand as the best option, with Mega Rayquaza and several of the top Dragons dwarfing much of the competition.
- The current Ground Type superstars fall behind the top Dragons for the most part, though Primal Groudon in particular has outstanding overall performance and boosts Ground Types by just existing, meaning the top Ground counters can be deceptively strong.
- Rock Types tend to fall behind the competition, though many of the top Rock Types are still great.
Dodging strategy
-
Try to dodge Dragon Claw if you're close to a charged move and your Pokemon is about to faint, otherwise dodging Fire Blast and Overheat is definitely recommended.

Best Raid Boss Counters
Supreme Mega Evolution Counters

Dragon Tail | Outrage | Best |
Mega Rayquaza once again soars above the competition with its sky-high DPS, with its only standing rival being Primal Groudon. This is an outstanding counter that can make short work of Mega Charizard X, especially in Windy weather.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw

Mud Shot | Precipice Blades | Best |
Primal Groudon is the one Pokemon that can directly compete with Mega Rayquaza in this raid. While it lacks a bit of sheer DPS, it makes up for this with an amazing TDO and a passive Ground Type boost for the team, even when not active. However, the one area that it has issues is the fact that the Ground Types that it boosts tend to fall behind the top Dragons by a fair bit.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: None
Good Mega Evolution Counters

Rock Throw | Rock Slide | Best |
Mega Diancie has the distinction of being the strongest Rock Type counter to Mega Charizard X, as well as a comprehensive resistance list that includes a double-resistance to the ever-annoying Dragon Claw. However, its TDO is a little lower than many might expect considering this resistance set.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Air Slash, Dragon Claw (2x), Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: None

Dragon Tail | Outrage | Best |
Mega Garchomp is the silver medal of Dragon Type Mega Evolutions, and playing second-fiddle to Mega Rayquaza isn't anything to be ashamed of. It's a great attacker with strong performance that isn't entirely overshadowed by Mega Rayquaza, as it can still put in great work when called on.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw

Dragon Tail | Outrage | Best |
Arguably the bronze medal of Dragon Type Mega Evolutions, Mega Salamence is a good all-around option that works well but doesn't put in quite the performance of the above.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw

Dragon Breath | Dragon Claw | Best |
The other contender for the Bronze Medal, Mega Latios has higher TDO but lower DPS when compared with Mega Salamence.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw
Fast Move | Charge Move | Rating |

Dragon Breath | Outrage | Best |
Stronger on the TDO side when compared to Mega Latios, but weaker in the DPS department.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw

Smack Down | Stone Edge | Best |
Mega Tyranitar is better as a Dark Type attacker, but it's also a very solid Rock Type attacker that can put in solid work here.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Air Slash, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: None

Rock Throw | Rock Slide | Best |
Mega Aerodactyl has substantially less TDO than the other Rock Type Mega Evolutions, but is still an okay pick.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Air Slash, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: None

Dragon Tail | Outrage | Best |
One of the classical uber-Dragons, Shadow Salamence is a bit glassy, but it has outstanding DPS to make up for it. It can't really compare with the top Dragon Type Mega Evolutions, but the fact that it's not a Mega Evolution itself means that it doesn't have to in order to be objectively good.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw

Smack Down | Rock Slide | Best |
Shadow Rampardos falls a bit behind Shadow Salamence in terms of DPS/TDO, but it's still a great option that hits hard.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Air Slash, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: None
Fast Move | Charge Move | Rating |

Dragon Tail | Outrage | Best |
A strong Dragon attacker, Shadow Garchomp puts in great work here.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw

Dragon Tail | Outrage | Best |
The classic Dragon in Shadow forme. It's still great.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw
Fast Move | Charge Move | Rating |

Mud Shot | Precipice Blades | Best |
The top Ground Type attacker that doesn't have the word Primal in its name, Shadow Groudon has great overall performance that definitely makes it worthy of a team slot.
- Strengths: None
- Weaknesses: None
Fast Move | Charge Move | Rating |

Dragon Tail | Spacial Rend | Best |
Palkia's Origin Forme has DPS that's just a bit below the top Shadows, but it also has a double resistance to Fire Type attacks, meaning it will be very bulky in over half of the battles that it takes part in.
- Strengths: Fire Spin (2x), Fire Blast (2x), Overheat (2x)
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw

Mud Slap | Scorching Sands | Best |
Shadow Excadrill's Steel sub-typing is normally what makes it stand out above some other Ground Types as great in select raids, but it can just as likely be a hinderance here due to Mega Charizard X's plethora of Fire Type attacks. Still, it's great for filling in holes and shoring up team weaknesses.
- Strengths: Air Slash, Dragon Claw
- Weaknesses: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat

Mud Slap | Rock Wrecker | Best |
Smack Down | Rock Wrecker | Best |
A tank of a Pokemon, Rhyperior has the tools necessary to sit pretty close to Palkia - Origin Forme and Mega Diancie, though just a tad weaker.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Air Slash, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: None
Fast Move | Charge Move | Rating |

Dragon Breath | Dragon Claw | Best |
Often overlooked, yet legitimately good in its own right.
- Strengths: Fire Spin, Fire Blast, Overheat
- Weaknesses: Dragon Claw
Fast Move | Charge Move | Rating |

Much like Shadow Excadrill, Dialga - Origin Forme normally relies on its Steel sub-typing to stand out as a threat that can keep up with Palkia's Origin Forme in its own right. However, it's still a great option that has the advantage of not really caring about Mega Charizard X's moveset.
- Strengths: Air Slash
- Weaknesses: None
