PVE Offensive Moves Explanation

  • Poison Jab is on par with Acid, the former having higher power, the latter higher energy gain.

  • Lick is slightly behind them. What it lacks in damage it makes up for in energy gain.

  • Gunk Shot is clearly superior to Sludge Wave, having higher base damage for the same energy cost.

  • Infestation and Dark Pulse are more suited towards gym defense.
  • Acid Spray is a terrible move in raids.
  • Thunder Punch does not synergize well with any of Muk's fast moves, leaving it useless on an attacking Muk.
  • Return is pointless on Muk.

PVE Defensive Moves Explanation

  • Infestation is slightly superior to Poison Jab and Acid, offering counter coverage and better energy gain.

  • Dark Pulse is a fantastic charge move on Muk, with multiple bars and phenomenal counter coverage.

  • Thunder Punch is another fantastic charge move on Muk due to having three bars, a reasonably early damage window, good neutral coverage, and good power.

  • Gunk Shot is strong, and it literally throws a garbage can, which is neat.

  • Acid Spray is a 3-bar STAB charge move, but its low damage means that it's actually out-damaged by Thunder Punch despite the later not having STAB.

  • Both Lick and Sludge Wave are relatively ineffective on defense.
  • Return is hard to dodge, but it's just not as good as Thunder Punch for coverage or power.

PVE Overview

Smell that? That’s the scent of great gym defender decaying with each legendary released. For the longest time, the best answer to Muk was Dragonite. Frail Psychic-types couldn’t handle the combination of Infestation and Dark Pulse, and Ground-types were so slow that neutral attackers would get the job done faster. The release of Lugia, an extremely bulky Psychic-type, posed the first real threat to Muk’s viability. With Mewtwo and Groudon out, Muk has become yesterday's news.

While Muk is no longer an upper tier gym defender, it is still a very good gym defender. Its Poison-typing walls any Machamp trying to plow through.

PvP Moveset Explanation

Poison Jab + Thunder Punch and Dark Pulse or Acid Spray 

Poison Jab is recommended for its STAB damage output and above-average energy generation.

Thunder Punch is Muk's cheapest charge move energy-wise, and provides valuable coverage against common Water and Flying Pokemon. Dark Pulse features a balance between energy cost and damage output, and also provides coverage against Muk's weakness to Psychic-types. Acid Spray provides utility with its guaranteed -2 DEF debuff on the opponent, but it costs less energy to bait shields with Thunder Punch instead. Sludge Wave costs less energy than Gunk Shot if a high damaging charge move is needed, but Poison-type attacks aren't very valuable generally speaking. 

PvP Rating Explanation

Great League: 3 / 5

Muk is a mono-Poison type with respectable bulk. Updates to its movepool throughout rebalances in 2019 have improved Muk's performance in the meta, with Thunder Punch being a valuable asset against common Water and Flying picks, while Dark Pulse and Acid Spray provide accessible options compared to Muk's more expensive charge moves. Unfortunately Poison-typing isn't very useful in the meta partly due to the frequency of Steel-types, and Ground-type coverage is quite common among various meta Pokemon. 

Ultra League: 1 / 5

As a Poison-type, Muk is mostly a niche pick to counter certain Pokemon like Fairy-types and Virizion. Ubiquitous Steel-types in this league makes it difficult to justify Muk as a pick on the roster, while access to Dark Pulse is inadequate when dealing with bulky Psychic-types. 

Master League: 0 / 5

With a max CP of 2757, Muk lacks sufficient stats to perform well in Master League.
