Umbreon in combat
I was looking to generation 2 stats and I find out that umbreon has insane defensive stats . I think he has the most defense in the game and a high hp.
Do you think he will be usefull in combat? Back in the games ruby/saphire he was my best pokemon, the perfect annoyer (mean look, Toxic , baton pass)
If status effects are going to be implemented in near future he will be a beast.

He is not just tanky , his attack is average same as kangaskhan, but his defense is 20 points higher than articuno (best defense in generation 1) and 40 points higher than mew or blastois (second higher defense in g1)
His stamina is The same as executor ,clefable , gyarados or other great pokemons.
I think he will be top tier , something similar to wigglituff (tanky pokemon low cp) depending on his move pool .
Dark is good type for defense , only weak to bug, fighting and faerie. If he is able to learn bite and they implement one good dark charge move he will be great.

as an attacker, it can beat anything in a matter of time, thanks to its hp and def combination, but remind when the battle last longer, means more charge moves from the opponent, which will end up wearing down your hp too, and Dark moves only effective on Psychic and Ghost only, which is too less to be a counter in total population
as a defender, its good, it has the number like a lower version of Snorlax, but Dark type means almost everyone in the tier will hit you without 0.8 deduction, and without a good number in ATT means you hardly do damage on counter as well
sum up all the points, it only looks good in number,
as an attacker, basic ATT is still the major factor to determine a good attacker,
and for gym defender, overall numbers in ATT, DEF, HP, move set and type advantages are all necessary factors
to me, its like a defensive version of Gyarados, can do everything without too much weakness, but gym defending still not a favor in this game, which brings down the value of Umbreon
Nice analysis . regarding your second paragraph, when you attack you choose your oponent so in very few match ups, the defender has the 0.8 reduction damage. It is always bettter to have few weakneses than have resistance.
I agree I imagine Umbreon as a Wigglituff kinda pokemon, mini snorlax . Everything will depend on The moves he can learn, there are currently no great charge moves for dark type.
Generation 2 dark moves that deals damage are:
Crunch
Faint attack
Pursuit
Thief
Maybe umbreon can learn pursuit for The stab , but The power of this pokemon is in The ability to learn all those anoying moves like: curse, Toxic, mean look , confuse ray, double team etc. Hope niantic can add status condition soon .
