Charizard or Arcanine

I want to power up a fire type mon (not flareon). My better options are a level 24 Charizard with 93% ivs and WA/FB and a Arcanine level 20 89% with FF/FB. Both of them are "perfect", I know Arcanine is stronger and have a better max CP than Charizard but the level difference and Charizard being Charizard would be enough to make Charizard a better choice? Candies are not a problem, I already have enough to take charizard to level 30 and growlithe is not so rare in here.

Any opponent that you could take down with Arcanine, you could with Charizard. Higher level=less dust investment, best moveset.

Also, personal opinion, but Charizard is the motherfucker. Power him up.

"Any opponent that you could take down with Arcanine, you could with Charizard."

Not true. With dodging, Arcanine can take down a Lapras, but Charizard normally can't, because of super weakness to ice attacks as a result of his Flying type.

charizard isn't weak to ice, he just don't resist it like a pure fire does.

You don't even really need to dodge to take down Lapras with Arc just don't get hit with a charge move. Really like Arc before and post nerf.

Charizard is not weak to ice. His fire typing makes it neutral.

Why use a fire type to take down a Lapras? Use an electric one to make super effective damage and take it down faster!

A 2300+ Jolteon will finish off any Lapras I've met with HP remaining. You can easily take one or two charge attacks. Jolteon's fast, hard attack (well unless you're daft enough to use discharge) compensates a lot for the lower HP - the Lapras is no longer around to hit you :-)

I definitely had trouble against Lapras with my Jolteon. What CP Lapras have you battled against? I tried against 2780 CP Lapras with Ice Shard / Ice Beam.

Tried against Ice Shard / Ice Beam and Frost Breath/Blizzard. Can't remember the CPs though. I try and dodge the charge moves, but don't always succeed and still seem to survive the encounter.

Just tested a level 30 Jolteon to take down Lapras vs a level 30 Arcanine to take down Lapras. Jolteon had trouble staying alive despite dodging most attacks, while Arcanine got the job done a lot easier, even if it took a second longer to do so.

I'll have to give Arcanine another go. Good to give the Jolteons a rest anyway :-)

If you have enough resources I would suggest both. One has the best moveset without a fire move and the other has the moveset with two fire moves. Although I prefer a Arcanine with bite/ FT or FB reason being bite charges your special moves faster.

I would power up Charizard, but my opinion is based solely on rarity and level of awesomeness. Charizard is just way cooler.

Agree, why not both? If candy is no problem and you could always get more stardust, why not both. One maybe stronger than the other but both our badass in their own way.

If I had to choose, i think I choose the Charizard, is more a personal preference. But as suggested if You got the candy and the dust, do both

I use my Arcanines these days to take down Lapras and not much else. Don't really use Charizard much even though I have both WA/FT and WA/FB in the same range as my Arcanines. However, I'd power them both to 30 just because they are both awesome.

Your best choice seems clear to me: Charizard.
Better IVs, less stardust required, coolest mon, same use - maybe a bit more versatile because it'll be super-effective also against fight types with WA.

I personally have a Charizard 93% like yours at lvl 32 and enjoy to play it vs Exeggutor. Also have 4 Arcanines with >90% IVs and optimal/decent moves and never bother to power them up. Fire types make gyms quick and easy to take down.
I'd invest my stardust on good defenders and pokemon I like. Arcanine may be a good place-holder in gyms because of high CP, but it's an awful defender...

I wouldn't power up both. Not worth the stardust, in my opinion. If Growlithe is common in your area you may wait to get a higher level wild growlithe with good IV. In the meantime your arcanine lvl 20 is still usable to take down gyms - may just have to dodge a couple of times ;)
