Moping up Meltan

Not really a question, just a heads-up for all those players that like me are still stuck somewhere in the quest for Meltan: Research Tasks for January include Kabuto, Anorith, Omanyte, and Aerodactyl - thus everything needed to finish the last step. If you are stuck on an earlier step of this research, you might consider shelving these encounters.

I'm forever stuck at step 3 I believe, dittos are nowhere to be found.

Looking for 1 more Omanyte or Kabuto. I assume finishing comes with some Ks of stardust, just want to time that with a star piece/big hatch batch. Meltan, meh.***read ahead: after I find the final oma/kab stage 8 gives 8k SD and that immediately takes me to finish stage 9 which is 9k SD

You don't really need any timing for it, you get Meltan before the 8k reward so just leave the 8th stage total reward unclaimed until you have a reason to use a star piece, then cash in the 17+8,5k when you have one going.

I have these free incubators I’m using to get the faster distance. Getting thru the super incubators I got with the holiday ultra box, too. I have 1372 coins...thinking of another ultra box but don’t want to buy two 100 coins and already thwart a NY resolution about spending money (besides gas/time) on this capricious game.***I don’t get many/any boxes and I have 22 starpieces, so probably a bit too stingy with those, whereas seems I’m never stingy when using stardust.

I need a last exeggcute. I completed the task hatch an egg almost every day for the last month and I only got 4 of them. They used to be one of the most common wild spawns but suddenly they are nowhere to be found...

Alolan Exeggutor is in raids and counts for this. Similarly, when you get to step 7 Alolan Marowak counts for "Catch a Cubone". Raid boss list suspect to change when the winter event ends in roughly six hours.

I just need a lileep/cradily/armaldo/anorith. Found 2 kabuto in the same area one day and blye that task away, and had a banked dactyl. Wheres my sea lily or shrimp research!?

I got lucky few weeks ago and an anorith nest cropped up in a close park. Concurrently a lily nest was in an even closer park. I haven’t opened discord in 6+ weeks...I found one random Omanyte a week ago. I guess I need some nest reporting help finding the last oma/kab—even though it is raining and it looks to keep that up a while. Makes me value the one level 28 shiny Omanyte I was able to catch, still don’t have a shiny kab

I'm not sure if this is obvious or not, but you guys realize you do not need to complete this quest to get Meltan (or candy).

If you have a switch, or even know someone that does, or even happen upon a gym with anyone that has one (as I do), then you'll be fine. You can get your meltan and a box that will yield 15-20 meltan and 100+ candy in one shot. You don't need to complete the Meltan quest to get Meltan. In fact, at this point it's not even worth it.

Granted, the OCD in all of us wants that quest done. However, the rewards aren't even close to simply meeting someone/anyone with a switch. Even a complete stranger.

I know the usual reply is, "I don't know anyone with a switch." Neither do I, and I make it work. Secondly, you'll probably have a lot easier time finding someone with a switch than completing the Meltan Quest.

Last, even if you do complete the Meltan quest, you will never ever get Melmetal without someone having a Switch anyway. One way or another, you need to find someone with a switch for the Melmetal.

While it would be a frivolous waste of them, rare candies render your closing paragraph completely false. I have almost 600 of them, I could easily have Melmetal by now if I felt it was worth the candy dump even with only catching the research Meltan.

I know you’re not saying it, but FYI to others: Melmetal is a terrible gym defender, autoselect loves Heatran and a level 25 Heatran owns Melmetal—-takes seconds to beat it 3 times

I think Melmetal's claim to fame is in PvP. Agreed otherwise though, there are better options on the PvE front both on offense and defense. The main reason I can think of for sticking it in gyms is to help out fellow teammates looking to snag a quick candy from gym feeding.

Finally. I got stuck waiting for a Cubone, and I've been sitting on the last stage for almost a month.

Update to any latecomers reading this: the Aerodactyl and Anorith research were bugged and have been removed. Kabuto and Omanyte research still exist but you're on your own for the other fossils.

So you are saying Omanyte and Kabuto can be obtained though a current (or even a recently past) research task? If so, what is the task(s) for Omanyte or Kabuto?
