Yeah, I definitely like Aqua Tail a lot more. It's less that it does more DPS, but more that it does very comparable damage with one of multiple charges. Whether or not you want to unleash it as soon as you charge it or as a last ditch attack, with it you can at least use the move before the bar is fully charged, and so there's less chance of wasting charge potential with your fast moves. (If you ever play a phone game where you can only engage in matches by using energy, generally you always want your energy to be charging, and never want it to be full.)
Vaporeon is used as an attacker for a few simple reasons. The first reason is the combination of both the ability to 'fast attack' with the quick move "water gun" (0.50s) and the fact that "water gun" is also a 20 dps move. Meaning: the quick move is faster than ALL the charge moves AND has a higher dps than BOTH "water pulse" and "hydro pump".
"Aqua Tail" is slightly better as a charge move at 21.28 dps, however, I get interrupted all the time IF I use a charge move and I see myself interrupt my opponent just as easily.
My conclusion is that although it'd be nice to have a perfect Vap w/ Aqua Tail and Water Gun, it is probably not worth the trouble if you find a perfect IV Vap and running only Water Gun.

I disagree due to the larger cooldown window. I have two Vapes with identical IV's; one with aqua tail and the other hydro pump. The hydro pump leaves my vape helpless for about 4 seconds, which is devastating when going against a higher level pokemon or one that is strong against water.
There is a slight level difference with the hydropump one being a few levels lower, so it could be due to levels. I should have that fixed in a day or two, so I'll revise my opinion if I find it was due to levels.
Actually hydro pump is the better alternative rather than Aqua tail because the DPS is actually higher. You would have to do two Aqua Tails in order to do the same damage as one hydro pump, you can charge up on hydro pump faster than 2 charges of the aqua tail and to deliver both attacks rather than one also sets your DPS back. Even on the Pokemon website that shows the difference of DPS not to mention TheSilphRoad website.
