The Current State of Legendaries

I recently saw Niantic’s post on Twitter for next month’s Field Research Breakthrough rewards, and virtually everyone did not seem pleased about it. Most posts stated how dull the game has become as a result of the over abundant release of legendary Pokémon, and that legendaries are not even exciting anymore because most people already have them now. People have also stated in the past that the raid system has made acquiring legendaries very easy and hardly poses a challenge to players; that hasn’t seem to have changed even for the Gen 4 legendaries released, so far. It also doesn’t help that Niantic lowers the stats of legendaries that are above 4000 CP, making them easier to beat in raids, while simultaneously undermining the potential of a few to the point of irrelevance. Most recent one was Giratina. The nerf to its stats certainly was a shaft for it, and its mediocre movepool pretty much sealed the deal for its uselessness. I can understand most peoples’ frustration, since Giratina is a monster in the main games, but didn’t transfer very well to GO.

Unfortunately, I personally haven’t felt much excitement for legendaries lately. I think Niantic could have sustained some form of excitement and suspense for legendaries by at least making legendaries raids very rare to occur. Additionally, legendaries could have worked the same way as Mythicals do, in which you only get one each by completing special quests for each legendary, like how it was done for Mew, Celebi, etc. The legendaries could also have been acquired via the Field Research Breakthrough at random, but Niantic announcing which legendary will be next kinda eliminates that suspense. Niantic could have done some of these from the start, but people already have a dozen or two of Mewtwo, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, etc., so it might be too late for that.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think future legendaries (Dialga, Palkia) will bring the hype? (This is no rant or complaint, btw. Just wanted to have a conversation lol)

I think Dialga and Palkia will bring some sort of excitement as they're much better than anything else we've gotten recently, and I think people really miss the times we used to hype new legendaries. And honestly Palkia is only second best to Ray and Dialga has a very unique niche in the game, having good Dragon DPS combined with the ability to tank strong Dragon-type charge moves from the high base attack Dragon bosses, so I'd say they really are pretty good legendaries. The hype won't be as big, but at least there will be some hype.

I think the rerelease of Rayquaza would generate more hype though, whether it's with the shiny form or with an exclusive move.

Well said. I think the weather trio definitely brought a lot of excitement for players, and bringing them back with their shiny forms would be great. I hope the release of Dialga/Palkia is just as, if not, more successful than the weather trio (and Mewtwo, of course lol).

Personally I plan to get more active with raids when they come, provided there is a raid scene to work with at that point. Which sadly isn't a certainty.

The thing of giving already powerful mons new better moves or just making every new legendary be relevant by being powerful (like people only care for Dialga and Palkia because they will be strong and calling Cresselia dex filler because it's weak) is that eventually power creep will.consume the game! Shinies are the only "safe" way to re-ignite interest in a mon or create hype. It would be better if most mons could be useful in certain niches but the simple nature of Go doesn't allow that, only strong stats matter. I think they will hold the release of both Dragons for some time since as you say they are the only ones capable of creating hype and make waves in the current meta

If Niantic was really up to the task of balancing the game in an optimal way to make players interested, the game would look very, very different. Making Palkia strictly worse than Rayquaza is only scratching the surface of what's wrong about it all. Loads of games do powercreep right in a way that entertains the players. But Niantic isn't good at game design.

No, they won't Palkia and Dialga are just Dragon types, nothing more. I might keep 2, but not 6. To be honest this game is hopeless. At this point it's just a waste of my precious time.

Gen 4 having a ton of legendaries and fewer normal pokemon that other gens certainly doesn't help regarding the abundance of legendaries ^^ (but if people were limited to only one per account imagine how salty they would be if they get low IVs ones and couldn't change them)

You’re not wrong. I wonder if giving each legendary (one each) a fixed IV would be ideal (i.e. when you get your Mewtwo, the IVs are automatically 100%, and the same for every other legendary).

I’m fairly new but has the game always been this liberal with releasing legendaries? Or is it just because 2018 was dubbed the “Year of Legendary”? Do you think the same pace will carry through to next year?

It seems like there are two camps: people who are upset when a new legendary or two isn’t introduced every month like clockwork, and people who are burnt out and disillusioned because of the over-release.

The game began in August 2016 and raids were introduced in July 2017 with the legendary birds among the first bosses (but Mewtwo was limited to EX Raids).

I don't think making legendary raids extremely rare is a good answer. It would be a great answer, if not for spoofers.

What was unique to Go when it first came out, was following that noisy crowd of 5000 people running downtown because someone had heard there was a Dragonite. THAT was insane. Not even for a legendary.

So sure, if Legendary raids were actually rare, like say there was one in a major city per day (which means over the course of a month you may see one or two if you're a common player) then people would probably go mad for legendaries. Combine that with some easier access to rare candy and better balance, and people would probably be powering up every legendary they caught. It wouldn't matter that Palkia is a bit worse than Rayquaza if you only managed to find one or two Rayquaza.

However, Spoofers ruin any chance that had to work. Your casual players would have one or two of most legendaries (and zero of some!) while your spoofers would have the same amount they do now. At a minimum they'd be able to get 3 per day while waiting long enough between for the travel to be feasible.

Can't blame it entirely on spoofers though... I don't think non-players like the crowd of people chasing rare pokemon. Our "fair" playerbase has done it to ourselves as well. Whether it was all the trash left behind in the popular areas, or masses of people jay-walking across the busiest streets and everyone following them even once the traffic gets there again - the game can't make that kind of excitement a regular thing without some response from countries. You'd start getting people in car accidents because people are speeding in their car to get to that legendary raid that's a 45min drive away, etc...

With all that said - I don't think it's a problem that Legendaries are as common as they are, though. Legendaries have never really seemed special. In every pokemon game, you could always acquire the legendaries. In the anime, some trainers had teams of legendaries. I think the "lore" that there is only 1 of each legendary pokemon (from Gen 1) has long been replaced, at least for certain legendaries.

People were always going to want to fill their pokedex, so legendaries kind of had to be available to everyone fairly easily. It may have been nice to make them actually challenging to beat - but again there's the inclusive aspect. If it's challenging for a level 40 player (e.g. make maximum raid size 5 or so trainers) then it becomes near impossible for a level 25 player.

And finally - IVs. Without the ability to get a massive number of legendary pokemon, you'll struggle to get one with good IVs. People want good IVs on their favorite and best pokemon, so people wouldn't be really happy if they only find one or two and they weren't even that good.

Yeah, in England for Squirtle and Larvitar days both, the elderly dog walkers in the park weren't too pleased with the 150 trainers circling it.

I’m fine with Niantic polluting the raid waters, I’d rather them do that than have the gumption to tier 6 Groudon/Rayquaza/Dialga/Palkia

The irony is that I could get 5 legendary Pokémon tomorrow, but I cannot evolve a non legendary even though I have 900 candy for it. Legendary are more common than Pidgey.

You have some points, but anybody could get to level 20 in a day. Catching a level 20 legendary not a game altering event. I raided the crap out of Giratina bc it was easy (but no money spent)...got me 167 giratina candy (early candy bonus). If it was a legendary worth having that wouldn't be enough to make a really good one.

Your only gate to salvation is for Nintendo to kick Niantic out and lend the game to more competent developers. This is it.

Well, Nintendo should also take some development criticism since Meltan seems pretty dumb.

Pokemon design has always gone down the drain since generation 5, 6 years before Pokemon GO even started.

The problem is we've had so many defensive Legendaries lately who, in a simplistic game like Go, serve no purpose other than being dex fillers. With gyms the way they are right now, even if Legends were allowed in them it wouldn't make a difference. When was the last time you powered up a defensive Pokémon, Legendary or not? There isn't a need to and therein lies a big problem. The game is so unbalanced that whenever a defensive tier 5 comes along, we don't want or need multiples of them. I'm sure when the better attackers are released there will be a surge of interest but they shouldn't leave it too long to release them as another defensive Legendary after Cresselia might be too long to wait for some. From a personal point of view, am glad of the break as going out to do tier 5's takes up alot of my time and at this time of year it is a problem finding it.

I would say the problem is the battle system is so boring that any bothering with this game past this point is a terrible waste of my time. All pokemon are the same, and any pokemon out of the fateful 10 are completely and utterly hopeless. Not even Dialga or Palkia will save this, since they are just yet another Dragon type.

This game at this state, or to be said, as long as Niantic is in charge, is unfortunately...hopeless.
