What to buddy for Meltan quest stage 4?

I have been walking Chansey for the past few months and switched to Electabuzz last week, but Electabuzz has returned as a raid boss (and with SGPokeMap, I can easily find it).

Should I switch to a 1 km buddy to speed up stage 4 of the Meltan quest? Main reason to rush is that later stages require catching species that are common during this event but otherwise rare. However, most 1 km buddies are useless in the current metagame.

Just buddy a Magikarp(requires 1km to get 1 candy) & walk 5kms with it. It's really not that lengthy or difficult.

+1
I show off with my red Gyarados whenever buddy distance is a research requirement. It is already maxed and I have plenty of Magikarp candy anyway, but whatever.

This is what I'm doing. My buddy for step 2 was Luxio because it felt cheap to switch it mid-step but as soon as I finished it my red Gyarados became my buddy and will be until I clear the requirement.

I have thousands of Magikarp candy, so my only concern was the opportunity cost (1 Chansey or Electabuzz candy), but since Magikarp is my favourite Pokemon, I will go ahead and walk it.

Just walk a 1KM one and get it done quickly. Sure, most of them aren't useful but it'll be complete in 5KM - especially with adventure sync, it'll be done before you know it.

I would, for some of the reasons you already stated. Namely the increased spawn rate of pokemon that might otherwise be difficult to encounter in your local biome(s.)

Consider your average daily distance walked in game. That may help you make your decision and give you a timeline.

I decided to put on a random Starly just to get the 5km done ASAP because I'm concerned that I might have trouble with the next few aspects of the quest later on as even now, Cubone aren't common where I am, for example.

I don't think I'm going to be stuck anywhere, but it's winter here now and my phone doesn't do well with cold, so the amount that I'm playing has dropped by about half. I don't want to take any chances.

For what it is worth, people have reported that catching Alolan Marowak from raids counts for that step.

Catching fossil pokemon is the potentially problematic step. Hopefully Niantic continues the fossil spawns for a while. But any sentence that starts with "hopefully Niantic" is already dangerous.

I did it with Cleffa (I'm digging the Clefable quest, building an army of them to put in gyms). It went really fast. Adventure sync seems to give me a lot more distance than the default game settings did. Pick whatever 1km walker you need more candy of. Geodude, Magikarp, Cleffa, Jigglypuff, Pidgey, Starly, Caterpie, Weedle (the later ones on the list are non-optimal, probably).

With a 1 KM buddy, it flies by.

Managed to bag a hundo Clefable from that research. 1044 is the magic number in case you weren't aware.

I switched over to a Starly - I have the least candy for them of the 1k options - but in hind sight it seems a bit silly to have switched over to getting useless candy just to rush that step. If I were doing it again I would probably choose a Buizel - they are rare enough that I actually need the candy to evolve one and at 3k/candy the extra km are not too onerous.

I did it with a Weedle, just because I thought it'd be different
