Are Magikarp much harder to find?
I might be out of the loop since I've only just started getting back into pokemon go since gen 4 got introduced but I find it really hard to find magikarp now. Magikarp used to be very common around my city region and near the docks but now I rarely see any around that area where as back when gen 1 was the only one out they were everywhere.

I am in the New Zealand region if that is an important factor for this.

If completing the special research soon is a big priority for you, Magikarp as a buddy gives candy every 1km, which can help.
But if you're patient, it'll probably eventually appear as an event pokemon again and be much easier to catch everywhere. We already had 2 or 3 events this year where Magikarp was everywhere.
Your Magicarp population is currently hit by multiple effects:
- There are about three times as many species competing for spawn points.
- We are in the middle of an event that favors Ghost and Dark types.
- Generation 4 is being rolled out and these new pokemon have increased spawnrate.
- Water pokemon spawn particularly often in rainy weather, which should be comparatively rare during this time of the year in New Zealand.
