Mewtwo useless without SB?

I have a 98iv 15 15 14 2951 CP Mewtwo with Confusion and Psychic, worth powering up even though not having SB?

If you want the best machamp coutner its good, but in a general sense, yes, a nonshadow ball mewtwo is near worthless. Few match ups through out the entire run of the series other pokemon cannot do better, and it being stuck with the absolute trash move of psychic. Machamp is literally the only current match up it holds supremacy at. (SB mewtwo beats is agaisnt gengar unless its windy) Theres also the threat of eventual community day where mewtwo gets Psystrike, I have a 96% one that I have no idea what to do with, so im in the same boat. I'd just keep it as a trophy, kinda like a shiny

Terrakion was really its only hope for a legendary raid it would be best against, but then meteor mash metagross took that (and with al the weaknesses it had, mewtwo was bound to loose that sooner or later) With Focusblast it can be an ok gym clearer, but meteor mash metagross still beats it there in potion efficiency (and gardevoir beating) and machamp out DPS's it for fastest blissey counter. Ice beam could have had a chance ice Rayquaza was next, but with mamoswine confermed to have the best set it could have gotten, and the three electric types that greatly outpace it with thunderbolt, on top of flamethrower being just bad in general, theres no place for really any mewtwo set aside from psychic, which while its the best psychic attacker, psychic is an irrelevant type agaisnt anything but machamp

Partially disagree. We don't know what will happen to the meta going forward. Psychic might become very important again, and the all time best psychic attacker is Mewtwo, currently saddled with the rather poor charged move Psychic. That could change, and we don't know how.

For the Ice, Fire, and Electric charged moves, Mewtwo is kind of like a more expensive Eevee - it does them pretty well, but requires rare candy and something else (or several something else for Fire) does it better. But if you have no Ice, Mewtwo will suffice, although that problem should go away once Mamoswine comes into play. If you have no Electric, Mewtwo can do a passable job, and not be weak to ground, etc.

I have a few good Mewtwo from last month, and still haven't figured out a good plan for what to do with them. Sit on them for now is the best I've got so far.

Just my experience with Mew, which from a typing perspective it's a very similar case: I have been using it against the Lati-twins and Regis by changing it's charge move to something SE just for fun, and it always was a good tanky filler. It resists the widely spread Focus Blast and Psychic moves, and it always helped with gym sweeping.

I can think of cases where Mewtwo would excel at this task due to having massively higher Attack than Mew. Against common dragon legendaries you can use Ice Beam, and there is more than just Machamp in Tier 3 solo challenges (Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee are pretty good ones to use Psychic).

I personally have one full Psychic at L40 that will serve me for this sort of purpose using TM's.

Whether it’s worth it is up to your uses and needs. Do you need a Confusion+Psychic Mewtwo right now? Maybe not but he’s still the best psychic attacker in the game.

I don’t get this narrative that Mewtwo without Shadow is useless. The weakest role he plays is a fire attacker and even then he does better than many of the solid options. Don’t start thinking he’s worthless because he can’t learn his one really good move. Is it smart to spend a lot of RC and dust on a bunch? Probably not but powering one up wouldn’t leave you with a ton of regret in my opinion. I use Ice Beam Mewtwo frequently in gyms and now against Giratina for lack of Dragons

I wouldn't go that far about Flamethrower Mewtwo, it still gets out-paced by actual fire types in ideal matchups. The rest of its moves are still pretty solid even if they are/will soon be outclassed. In particular though it still is and will likely remain the best Psychic attacker in the series.
