Why did Niantic give huge XP bonuses for leveling up friends?

This seems a strange decision. It's not making Niantic more money (the default explanation for most things they do) if anything it's detrimental because it reduces the need for lucky eggs.

I hear of people having some fun by levelling up "empty" accounts by simply adding many friends. Seems strange that Niantic would allow people to reach level 40 without playing the game.

I hit level 40 today. I spun a stop to hit that magic number. A better climax than levelling up another ultra friend.

Xp is useless and you can level up easily anyways. No big deal really...

I assume to encourage players to make friends, help players who started out recenty and keep everyone logging in daily. Also people use lucky eggs for a whole load of other things including doubling XP from friendship bonuses (ultra/best).

I can't think of a more tedious, soul-crushing activity than mass evolving for XP, although Gift giving comes close. Raiding and Special Research are the only fun way to get XP right now.

Hopefully PvP battles and whatever the new fitness goal system will be compelling ways to get XP

Hardcores might even be more interested in lucky eggs again because of it. People who were already pushing for 3x,4x, 5x level 40 now have a much nicer way to use their lucky eggs, mass evolving got stale ages ago and raid trains require a lot of coordination and time commitment.

Simple .... Niantic caters to casual and rural players.... they would realize this if the would just wipe away the tears and stop flooding the internet with constant complaints about how the game isn’t fair to them.

Last thing you can say is that Niantic caters rural players. They don't give a f**k about rural players.

Wow you have never been even close to a rural area if you think Niantic caters to rurals. Last time I went outside of the city for a weekend I jogged 7km through forest to get to the nearest stop so I could keep my streak going. The next stop after that would've been 20km away. There were 0 spawns on my 7km route except for 2 around the stop.

I don't understand the reason, but from the ppl I play with, level 40 players care more about XP than others. They are usually the ones who wants to coordinate lucky eggs when leveling XP, or double/triple raids on an egg.

Lol Yeah, old habits die hard.. Planning, grinding, and maxing out lucky eggs is how we got to lvl 40 over a year ago

Why gift everyone up to L40? Two words:

Wizards Unite!

Assuming they must be getting close to a release date, what better way to encourage players to migrate to a new game?

Good luck with that, Niantic. I’m still playing this game despite them, not because of them. I’m certainly not looking to jump into another of their games.

It will appeal to some people, there's plenty of harry potter fanatics in the world.

i'll be keeping an eye on it's release. Perhaps Niantic will learn lessons from the blunders they've made with GO and make it a more polished game upon release.

Yeah, I’ve learned my lesson with Niantic after this one... “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me”

There’s nothing that consume more premium items and stardust than maxing out mons. In my son’s account he’s still L29 and simply doesn’t feel the pressure to raid everyday because he can’t power up more his favorite ones. I raid like crazy for resources because powering up to L40 a number of mons with optimal moves takes an insane amount of dust, candy and TMs. And binge raiding costs money.

So there you go.

I wonder how many friends one has to make to reach level 40.

Each friend is a maximum of 326,000 experience. That's about 3 per million and another one and a it on the end, so 62.
