SC+SB Gengar Usage in Mewtwo Raids
Just wanna find out trainers who have legacy Gengar and if you use it against M2. So after doing many Mewtwo raids, I always have my Hp/Att/Def 13/13/15 SC+SB maxed out Gengar at the front. I have mixed feeling about using it.
Against Confusion M2, Gengar takes 4 hits before fainting. Any charge move except Focus Blast also KO Gengar, which makes Gengar can only fire 1 Shadow Ball in battle. Which isn't bad I guess because it is still a high DPS 10 seconds.
The only viable match up for Gengar is VS Psycho Cut + Focus Blast M2, in which I dodge everything and can battle more than 30 seconds, fire many Shadow Balls before fainting. Gengar's triple resistance against fighting is so good in this case!

I think the real question is whether putting 5-7 shadow claw + 1 shadow ball is worth the time when it faints and the next one enters battles. For sure you cannot have more than 1-2 Gengar in your team in this case because re-entry after 6 faints wastes a lot of time, but if the 1/2 faints are worth the time between Pokemon switching then Gengar is still a good option to go for.
It is just annoying to faint so quickly though!
It's rare that you can identify the fast move, but PC/FB vs C/FB Mewtwo/Alakazam is one of those cases. Unless you have 6 high level Lugias, you will most likely see Gengars in the autoselect against PC/FB, but not against C/FB. The game wants to recommend Gengar against FB because of the triple resistance but correctly understands that Confusion wrecks them.
My 98% Gengar has the legacy SC/SB moveset, but I agree with your rationale. Anytime I went up against Mewtwo, my Gengar wouldn’t last very long. Of course, the dodge bug also interferes, so my Gengar has been one-shotted a few times.
Like the OP said, I would only really use SC/SB Gengar against PC/FB Mewtwo; he’ll actually hold down the fort for a bit and put in a huge chunk of damage against Mewtwo. Any other movesets, especially paired with Confusion, and Gengar’s toast in a mere few seconds.
I think if you can’t use a full team of mixed Shadow Claw and Sucker Punch, using only 1-2 isn’t worth it.
I always start out with a full team of Gengar, 2 with Shadow Claw, to knock a good amount of health from Mewtwo. Unless it’s got Psychic.
I have plenty of revives that I can eat some of my items each raid to even things out.
I usually lead with my SC Gengar. Using it against weather boosted Mewtwo is a no-go, but even against confusion you can land 2 shadow ball. Against psycho cut it’s great, you’re able to do a chuck of damage early on and likely secure damage bonus balls. Focus Blast is of course the best charge move to go against but you can dodge the others and possibly land another shadow ball
I led with mine for two raids today. In both cases (C/IB and C/P) I was able to use at least one Shadow Ball. It goes down fast but the high DPS for the little time it's out is pretty nice.
I can't stress its usefulness against PC/FB Mewtwo enough. Psycho Cut isn't nearly as devastating and it shrugs off Focus Blast. This particular move set puts Gengar as the third highest TDO option against Mewtwo.
Honestly one shadow claw gengar probabaly will not do too much since it dies so quick but if you have multiple they can throw out lots of damage quickly. Here is my starting 6 and I usually get 2 or 3 damage balls when raiding. Yes i faint every time but i have a team 2 with more mewtwo and TTar i put in after.
