What is it about this legacy move that makes it so valuable? a guy just posted in my trade chat he was trading one of his away, and the whole place kinda flipped out over wanting to get it.
I've heard a lot about RT omastar being valuable (like seemingly more so than other legacy holders), but never really understood exactly why. We had a few legacy gengar traded and things weren't like that, is there anything particularly special about RT omastar that is has preformance wise these days over an SD tyranitar or is it just a novelty thing?
I think the main niche is that rock is strong against fire (doubly so against rock/flying) while rock/water is double resistant to fire.
The desirability dates back to a time before Gyarados had a water fast move (long before Kyogre) when Omastar with Rock Throw ranked highly against a lot of fire, fire/flying, and x/flying raid bosses.
Also it is a fairly rare move that was removed from Omastar's available move pool very early with the first round of move changes.
Simple, it used to be the best rock-type attacker while being insanely rare. Rock was super good last year, which made Golem a top tier Pokemon, and RT/RS Omastar was better than Golem. With everyone going nuts over powering up their Golems, having an Omastar to lead your rock team made for an object of great envy. Its secondary typing was also a defensive advantage, making it double resist fire and resisted ice instead of being weak. Golem only had better tankiness against electric. So it gained this status of being a meta star that almost nobody had. That status is what still makes it desirable even with SD Tyranitar being strictly better as a rock attacker.
Elaborating on the rarity, the moveset went legacy very early, before the CP rebalance and before many players even had Omastar in the dex. Pretty much only people who lucked into a nest early or played hardcore in water biomes would even have been able to make an RT/RS Omabro. SC Gengars, C Exeggutors, BS Snorlaxes etc. are quite common by comparison because we had until gen 2 release to get one.

It was part of the very first move sets to become legacy. The first batch were mon that were given moves that they should never have been given, as they could not learn these moves in the main series.
Most legacy move sets have the chance to come back again (see Body Slam Snorlax) however, the very first batch, which included RT Omastar and Psybeam Chansey among others will NEVER be released again.
Basically, there are a lot of legacy move sets that could come back, but the very first legacy moves should be considered 'MISPRINTS' rather than 'LEGACY' and it is expected they will never return.
