Walking Eevee question

So, seems as if in part 4 we have to walk an Eevee 10km to earn candy. Suppose we start the walking early, will that count?

My gut feeling is that the progress bar will be for candy earned, with 2 slots to fill. So if I was at 4.5 km on walking an Eevee when I got to part 4, then the next half km would get me the first slot filled.

Of course, it could be totally different, but that's what my gut seems to point to. Any thoughts/speculations? We'll know in a day or two when our European friends get to it, because they were able to get their second part started with just a few hours left on the first day.

There is also an evolve Espeon and Umbreon quest, so if you're in a hurry you should have 1 pre walked Eevee.

I have two, one I was thinking about evolving to a Last Resort Espeon if the move was really good, and didn't use, and I'm walking an Umbreon candidate now, level 35, 15 attack, otherwise middling, will do fine in a gym occasionally.

Concerned that if I walk one now, and it gets a candy before I hit stage 4, I'll have to do another. That's my little worry here.

Since it specifically says "walk 10k" I'm holding off until I get there. I did luck out and see the Umbreon quest while still walking my shiny I planned to evolve into one, decided to save him for that research.

If it's "walk 10k" then I say it's gonna track distance and not candy

Just hatched Espeon before event by walking 10km, do i need to hatch another Espeon by walking 10km?

Yup. Just like all those poor people who evolved a Gyarados right before reaching that quest.
