Disappointing new field research reward

Got a "Make 3 excellent throws" after the event started. Thought the encounter reward should be something great as "3 excellent throws in a row" rewards Larvitar so this one shouldn't be too bad. Yet it turns out to be a Onix. Sad story.

I was just about to post this....what a freakin joke. Super annoyed. Are any of the johto event tasks good??

Definitely some of them are good. I had one yesterday that rewards Porygon, which will be great to stock up for Gen4.

Catch 3 Sunkerns gives you a (edit: evolution item -- I got an upgrade and mistook it for raid pass). I already have two of them stacked up. Just need to get one more and find Sunkerns now.

"Make 3 excellent throws" (NOT in a row) has always rewarded Onix. I have gotten several Onixes from this task and used the candy to power up a Steelix for gym defence.

Edit: Looks like my memory has failed me.

That quest never existed before, it was mistakenly reported and lived as a rumor for a while. I have never seen proof of it nor seen it myself, and I'm closing in on 6k research completed. The confusion came from the similarity of the throw 3 excellents in a row and throw 3 greats in a row.

I believe it's always had onix as a possible reward, the other possible one is larvitar, unless the three in a row is the possible onix/possible latvitar

So for a much easier quest you should still get a great reward? I agree that the Onix is underwhelming, but the difference in difficulty is massive. On a bad day I've thrown 50+ excellents before getting 3 in a row.

My thinking was make 3 excellent with larvitars as a rarer event based task only. Like how during adventure we had 2 eggs gets a rare candy. Just something so people can get a few larvitars especially if they do not have many.

Decent idea, but seems that Niantic didn't go that route. Larvitar spawn rate seems to be boosted massively from its normal levels though, there were 2 in my neighborhood within the first 12 hours of the event where normally you might see 1-3 per year.
