List of words censored by this new insanity filter

Seriously Dear the N:

DELETE THIS INSANITY. If you want to make your community a place for rainbow and ponies this will not work because more adults play this thing than kids do. This is censorship, and this is ALSO flat out ridiculous. The fact is that the only result that happens from incarcerating the majority for the sake of a minority is the path to destruction. Not only i cannot name my pokemon with "Start", i cannot name them with "Hell" or "Devil" to make confidence of my pokemon. What if i want to name my Scizor "Red Devil"? The only people that you will betray is your loyal customers and this won't add anything other than my contempt and resentment.

Now to the list:

Obvious is obvious category. I assume no sane person will name their pokemon with these right?

Here comes the insanity. Almost all of these words are literally being blocked for the wrong reasons.

Pedo*, Hell, Lucifer, Satan, Devil, Fag*, Ass*, Niantic*, Smack, Fairy, Weed, Loli*, Butt, KKK, XXX, tart*, Wat Wat, Ste Ste, Anus*, Jiggly, Troll, Fat, Heroin*, Pot, Trash.

*2 (Co"Fag"rigus)
*3 (Frosl"ass", Nosp"ass")
*4 (What if a niantic dev wants to name his pokemon his company name?)
*5 (i want to name my Mawile)
*6 Start is blocked but "Starter" is not
*7 "J"anus", M"anus" etc.
*8 (I want to call my Gardevoir or Latias a "Heroine". What do i do?)

I wasn't able to give my friend the nickname Janus, had to go with Janis instead, though that is the wrong spelling.

If they're introducing Niantic kids, they're removing headaches in advance. Kid friends you, and you've got an inappropriate name or one implying you're staff? That's a general no on most games. You may not like it but c'est la vie. Also "heroin" is blocked.

Good point about the "Niantic" being blocked. Posing as "Staff" or "official" ("Here's a Tyranitar that is from Niantic itself - you can tell because it's named "Niantic 248"!"). That blocking makes sense now.

Any kid that is old enough to know how to play these kinda games knows all these swearwords already, anyway, so who cares?

Also you wanna move the actual text down a bit so it's not just a ton of bad language up top? I get why you did it, not faulting that, but on the q+a display it looks...bad.

Pot and GSpot are blocked, but Spot is not.

Also, you can change the name of a Weedle back to Weedle, but you can't name any other Pokémon "Weedle". And you can't name your Weedle "Weed". (This goes for "Pedo" and "Sharpedo", and I'd imagine with every other Pokémon that contains part of the banned word as its' name)

While I get what Niantic is doing... most of it is just plain funny. Not in the "ha-ha" way, but in the "Is he really... okay, if he's doing that on purpose, it's okay to laugh at him." kind of funny.

I believe the main games have a similar (and similarly broken) filter.

What is wrong with ponies? Ponyta is cool.

There is zero reason to block penis and vagina.

So if a majority of the people want to use racial epithets, we should allow it because their need to be (needlessly and wrongly) racist is more important than protecting the minority?

I wanted to rename a friend "Chili" since he is from Chile (it's how we write Chile in French), and it was blocked. Still wondering why.

It’s blocked, people in my area have been trying to name friends/trades from Chili but can’t. Weird.

Funny and we just have to deal with it.

I will admit that I didn’t really give this any serious thought until I saw this thread and read it. Some of the comments caused me to think of a middle ground alternative.

With friendship and trading, your friends get to see the nickname of your buddy and the nickname of the Pokémon you are trading. This can be an issue for the few children than play the game or for others who might be offended.

So, Niantic could impose a filter that prevents you from having a buddy with an offensive name or trading a Pokémon with an offensive name.

Alternatively, they could use the same approach they have used forever with gyms. The name that is visible to the public in gyms is simply the Pokémon name (example, “Tyranitar”) instead of whatever you name your Pokémon as (example, ”Ttar14/12/13”). Your buddy would show up as “Tyranitar” on the friend screen and your trade would show up as “Tyranitar”.

Either approach would yield the outcome that I think they are trying to ensure. The second approach is one they’ve been using since the beginning and for which they apparently already have working code for.

I can't imagine it would be too difficult for Niantic to do one better and add an OPTIONAL "parental control" option (or whatever you wanna call it) that would let each user choose what they want to see. Let's say, my Sceptile, which I have innocently and affectionately named "ChrismasButt" (I know how to spell, character limits). To my mature adult friends, it will show up as-is. To anybody who has the filter turned on (kids, the innocent, etc.), it just shows up as "Sceptile". Or, if not that, then just do what you suggested and make it so that the inappropriately-named mons just can't be traded or shared/displayed/whatever. I understand not corrupting the young and delicate, and not encouraging or condoning just..... wwwwwWILD racism. But c'mon, Niantic, don't punish me by not letting me name my beloved Qwilfish "Pufferfuck". ;_;

I used to name my throwaway gym defenders "Trash." That is now considered inappropriate.

I just wanted to name my shiny Swablu Buttercream. They need to find a way to differentiate real obscene names from innocent ones that happen to contain a bad word.

And yes there is plenty of reason to censor words like penis and vagina.

I always Name my shinys after K-Pop bands, there is or rather was a band called C-Clown. But aparently you can't name your Pkm Clown because C-Clow was ok.
And I am really glad I already have used the names Lucifer and Satan because every Pokemon with 666 Cp always get's a synonym for the devil.

I just tried to rename my old pokemon for a guaranteed lucky as Old Fart. So apparently Fart is not allowed either.

And I am in no way a devil worshipper, but I've always thought it was fun to name my CP 666 pokemon with devil in the name. My latest was a teddiursa and I found out that is no longer allowed. Nor is Satan or Lucifer or otherwise. Thankfully as it was "Teddiursa", I just added the word 'tan' to the end to make it TeddiurSatan and it was allowed. But very annoying Niantic. Please find another way to filter. Other than the obvious offensive ones.

This filter can be circumvented by using Cyrillic (Russian and Ukrainian) to replace a letter with their Cyrillic equivalent. They look the same, but are from a different codepage and aren't caught by the censorship filter because of that. This filter is not only complete nonsense, it is also trivially easy to circumvent.
