still only get 1 candy for legendary trades?
I guess they don't get the candy bonus for trades. Is that right?

You get 3 candies as long as the two Mons you trade have been collected more than 100 km apart, this applies for legendaries as well. You can trade a Mewtwo for a pidgey and still get 3 candies for both, during the current event this candy bonus has been doubled to 6. But be aware that some Mons have lost information about location, check in the bottom of their page if it says where they have been caught/hatched. If this information is lacking, you only get 1 candy regardless. This is clearly a bug that affects both legendaries (all my Zapdos from research requests) and others.
I have a number of Mons sitting in my storage waiting for the next double candy event before transfer. Now I trade them instead, 6 candies for each is a very good deal indead!
It seems the double candy for the event is not a straight double, but a formula being applied.
I managed to trade Pokemon from downtown to uptown (14km apart) for 5 trade candy instead of 2 (more than double).
I managed to trade my one legendary yesterday for 6 candy for a 300km distance.
I'd assume you're seeing 1 go to 1 candy for a near zero trade distance. Try to get at least a couple km and it will probably go to 2 or even 3.
Feels like the distance threshold are 1km, 10km, 100km. And since sqrt(2) is about 1.4, you'll probably get 3 candy at over 1.4km, and 5 candy at over 14km.
There's no formula, it's just straight +3 candy for every trade. 0-10 distance gives +4 candy, 10-100 km gives +5 candy and 100+ gives +6 candy. I did 90 trades today and tested all of those multiple times.
Old research mons with no location data are apparently bugged or excluded on purpose and the bonus doesn't apply to them. Meaning there's no way to get more than 1 candy for trading them.
