The best friend breakdown

With the addition of friends, lucky pokemon, and limits, I think we need friends based on different reasons.

I think there are 4 main reasons to have friends.
1. Lucky trades
2. Raids
3. Distance
4. Items

I will start at the bottom...
For my kids, gifts are most important for items. This is probably also the case for rural players. Because of this, you want to have friends that frequently send you gifts, and you can do the same. Because of this, 20 friends is ideal, as you can send 20 gifts a day. Obviously not everyone will open a gift every day, so 20-30 is probably the max number you want.

Next is friends that live at a distance. This will give you eggs of pokemon from long distances, which will allow you to trade pokemon to make progress towards the pilot badge. I have a couple friends from Europe, and a couple from the other side of the US. I open their gifts when I have empty egg spots. 5 distances friends is a good number.

Raids. This should be the bulk of friends. These are friends you raid with on a regular basis and being friends gives you both benefits. I would aim for 10-15 of these friends to add to your long distance friends, for a total of 15-20.

Finally, you want close friends that you can trade with nearly daily, whether these are family members or alt accounts. Daily trades helps with getting lucky pokemon and working towards your gentleman's badge. I think 5 is a good number, as you can increase friendship by sending gifts, while maintaining other friends, and allows a massive amount of trades.

I think the perfect breakdown is...
5 friends that send gifts daily
5 regular distance friends
10 raid friends
5 close trading friends

20 total and up to 10 more for those that overlap or extra in each area.

I think 200 friends is totally pointless. I hope this gives you stuff to think about.

Just because there's a limit of 200 friends doesn't mean you have to add that many. Everyone's play style is different and having such a large ceiling for friends is to help emphasize that I think.

I have 60 on my friends list, most of which are from trainers in the two decently large groups I raid with. I may not know all of them by face but figure I'm likely to raid with them at some point, so working to those rewards will help.

I have a small handful of IRL friends on there for the obvious reasons.

What I don't have are any randos from the internet who I have zero chance of interacting with IRL - I get enough gifts, I don't need more. Especially with the daily gift opening limit.

Everybody plays differently and will friend varying amounts of people for whatever reasons. Some people may have alt accounts, bringing some obvious factors into play there. Some may friend as many foreign people as possible for Pilot badge bait. To try and make a "perfect breakdown" seems silly because it won't fit everyone single player's needs. This isn't a situation like DPS where there are objectively right and wrong answers, there's much more nuance here. What's perfect for someone may be completely useless to me.

the "friends" from far away that you will never know IRL also helps with having pokes from far away. then you can also get 3 candy when swapping pokes IRL.

Just because everyone plays different doesn't mean I can't offer advice. Every single guide or piece if information on this site is pointless if every raid you do has 10 people, yet this site exists none the less.

I try to be friends with anyone that I raid with more than once, and I'm trying to work on long distance friends for eggs. Numbers are less important than having one Ultra friend on every raid.

Additionally, I'm traveling to Europe and Asia at the beginning of September, and I'm saving old pokemon to do long distance trades to try to get good lucky ones. Also requires a large increase in Pokemon storage.

reason 6: Free 163000 EXP (>300000 with lucky egg) for every friend in your list.. this is good for players around lvl 30 and after 3 months you will be close to lvl 40

*Because of this, 20 friends is ideal, as you can send 20 gifts a day.*

shouldn't this be:
... can *open* 20 gifts a day. ?
i feel pretty sure i've send more than 20 gifts, well, everyday.
