How to beat an Ex raid for 3 level 25-30 players

So me and my mom and my brother (Mom level 30, me level 25, brother level 25) were doing a 4 star raid for a Rhydon, we were just attempting, and THEN a level 40 or so player just popped in with a Ho-oh, we dont know who it was or saw their car, and helped us beat the raid. A couple of days later, we got an invitation for a EX raidd. Since we are really bad and are just HOPING that that 40 level person will show up again, should we just rest assured that we wont win the raid?

Depends on the raid. If it's a Lugia or a Regice, it's not gonna happen.

Since when did Lugia and Regice feature in EX Raids?

Chances are there will be more than enough peopls attending. I got an ex pass in a small town and there were about 70 people that showed up. They trigger when enough people raid at the ex eligible gyms so keep raiding there when you can for more chances.

As for the battle against Mewtwo, use your best Pokémon. Bite/Crunch Tyranitar, Bite/Crunch Gyarados, any bug, ghost or dark type, even Dragonite. Just do what you can, if there’s enough people it shouldn’t be a problem.

My team was Tyranitar, Scizor, Gengar, Mew, Gyarados and Dragonite at trainer level 30

Great advice but I wouldn't recommend using Gyrados with B/C/only because his DPS is so low: 16.368
You got your Gengar at the highest: SC/SB 24dps, H/SB and SP/SB 22dps
Next would be Mewtwo PC/SB 22dps and C/SB at 21 dps but as much more bulk than Gengar
Bannette S/SB 20dps
T-Tar B/C 20dps with good bulk
Houndoom S/FP 19dps and easy to get
Pinsir BB/XS 19 dps
Absol S/DP 19 dps
Rayquaza DT/O 19dps
Scizor F/X 19dps
and then pretty much every thing else will be 18 or lower

With one account at level 30 and two at 25 it's likely they lack some of the premier counters, namely SC Gengar and their own Mewtwo. B/C Gyarados is solid if lacking top picks, especially against Focus Blast versions.

You kinda just hit yourself in the head with that one Gyarados definitely falls into he premier counters and if you actualy read what I placed that said Houndoom is easy to obtain definitely easier to get and MUCH stronger than Gyarados hahaha

What the hell? YOU just said Gyarados wasn't a premier counter due to lower DPS. Houndoom being easier/harder to obtain can vary from area to area, I see much more Magikarp where I live than I do Houndour. Obviously Houndoom is a better pick, I'm just saying that failing that B/C Gyarados isn't bad either. Despite the candy cost Gyarados can be easier to get if Houndour isn't a regular spawn.

When I run the raid on GoBattleSim with my Gengar he comes out terribly... He's not a very high level (29), but I expected him to do better? My level 33 Shiftry seems to decimate him in DPS and TDO. Am I using GBS wrong?

What move set does it have? If it doesn’t have shadow claw or has a poison move it likely won’t perform very well, but Gengar should still have very high dps. But it will likely faint after one charge move if you don’t dodge

Yeah I just listed Gyarados because many players have them especially after the kanto, earth day and water events in recent months. I used a Gyarados in my team that had water moves because it was higher IV and CP than my dark move set one, and I was on a full 20-person team so my 6 didn’t even faint out.

As for houndoom, I still don’t have the candy to evolve my houndour. I rarely, if ever, find them in my area unfortunately. Houndoom is one of my favorite Pokémon :/

Just about anyone that raided at that gym the same week you did will get an ex raid pass. Someone that soloed a wailmer that week could potentially show up. You will not be the only ones there. Unless if everyone else is busy or cannot attend.

THEORETICALLY, Mewtwo is a relatively easy trio at level 30 with optimized counters. There's a guide here:
https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/mewtwo-trio-raid-guide

Realistically, it's Mewtwo. More than just you three will be there to do it. The best piece of advice I can give would be to get there about 10 minutes before it starts so you can group up with others, as people like to run it as soon as it starts. I would still plan it following the above guide if possible. If you lack counters specific against Mewtwo then just throw your strongest Pokemon at it.

Note that the most optimal counters can vary depending on what moves Mewtwo knows. If you get there and have time before going in have someone enter with a Ditto lead to scope out its moves in case adjustments need to be made.

Also, there may be some spoofers who join your EX / Mew two raid. You will probably get plenty of legit players as well. Are you and the others all the same team / color? If not you will probably want to pair off with others of the same color so you can maximize balls. IE break up into teams of 4-8 trainers with the same color. For the great majority of EX Raids I have been on, I have used 2-3 Tyranitars (or Houndoom) which are good for 3 out of 4 charge moves of M2. The exception is Focus Blast (Fighting) which others have commented on and is well explained in the Raid Guides on this site. For Focus Blast you need a different team. BTW Mewtwo is not hard to catch, so relax and have a great EX Raid!!!

The most important advice is to get there 10-15 minutes before the raid starts.

Unless your area is dead, you won't be alone. Hopefully, an experienced player will coordinate, and the group will divide up into groups by team (color), possibly grouping the smallest two teams, or if there are a lot of people, doing multiple groups for the larger teams.

Mewtwo is an easier battle and an easier catch than most legendaries, so if things go well for you, you should all get a Mewtwo.

Like everyone said, the best advice is to get there before it begin.
15 minutes early is enough to meet other trainers. If there is a coordinated raid, find the leader and tell your situation, if there isn't one just jump in ASAP.
If you can find a raid group around your area either meet em in person, facebook, discord, etc, you can join also. It help a lot to play together in the current game dynamics.
Try to build your squad as as best as possible, just in case your area really dont have a group to do EX. Leveling up a little bit to get your counter at higher level is ok, especially for you and your brother
Trio is too much considering you and your fammily level, but if there is a chance 4 or 5 more trainers show up, It's reasonable to do it in range of your level if your counter is good
All the advice here about what counter to use is good, prepare what you can, and you can even suggest that to other trainer if you must do it without a big group.
I am asuming you dont have many counter, so learn how to use max revive if you must rejoin rather than battle party
Do not use auto select when rejoin.

There will almost certainly be people there. A gym is not Ex raid eligible unless enough people have raided at the gym in the week leading up to the invites going out - that means if you guys got the invite, a bunch of other people did too. Go to the gym and be there before the egg hatches. People typically aim to show up at hatch and start the raid soon after, so don't be late.

If you aren't on a local discord, someone there will probable be able to let you in on the local discord.
