Is hex gengar worth powering up?

I would like to power up a gengar but don't have any with shadow claw. My best IV one has hex/shadow ball. So my question is, is he worth powering up?

1) NO! I`m seeing next Halloween Gengar shadow claw having a brief return if Body Slam Snorlax is any indicator with research breakthroughs or even a community day featuring it.
2) Seeing the return of Zapdos coming and only new catches getting the new move similar to Community day Pokemon makes powering up stuff and thus investing candy and stardust dangerous and upsetting.
3) They`ve introduced TM`s just to make them useless down the line.

That is exactly what my group was talking about earlier we are petitioning to make TM's great again!

if its already a shadow ball/hex, then it cant become shadow claw unless that add it to be able to be tm'd on a possible CD, which in all likelihood, wont happen

if anything it would be a breakthrough like snorlax, and thats months away,

if you're in need of a ghost type, then power it up, its easy enough to get candy for

Nothing is worth Power Up Dude! they just gutted my lvl 40 Zapdos with a new Zapdos with Thunder Shock! Long Term Trainers are getting Gutted out here!!

I would not shed 1 tear to somebody maxing lets say 6 Raikou only for Niantic to buff an existing electric or release a new Pokemon with a new best Electric moveset, but buffing a pre-existing Pokemon only on new encounters is low, I feel like I should never bother to power anything and just use teams of weather boosted crap until if ever this game gets anywhere and a new fighting system is in place or pvp shows up!

Ignoring the above salt, do you have an immediate need for it? Right now the only raid boss that would make it beneficial is Mewtwo, and that varies depending on its charge move.

If you have an upcoming EX pass and literally no other counters than sure. If not I'd keep it on the back burner. The above posts do make a point, Shadow Claw could very easily make a return in October.

Mewtwo is not the reason I want to power one up, I just want to have a good one for future gengar/alakazam solos.

There's no guarantee if or when those raid bosses come back. Never spend dust until you have a confirmed target.

Even then, Tyranitar's a better option for both of those if you can get raids with others /hatch larvitar

Overall Tyra is a much better counter, but against Alakazam it struggles in beating the clock if you don't have several maxed. Gengar can be quite valuable to help your Tyra team get ahead. My stock team for Alakazam was Gengar-Tyranitar-Gengar-Tyranitar-Tyranitar-Tyranitar, both Gengars powered above the bulkpoint where they can take 3 Confusions.

This. If you need a ghost attacker, power it up and don't look back. That way, even if they nerfed it or release something more powerful it the future, it won't be a waste. The longer you go between power up and use, the more likely you are to be wasting dust.

Agreed, but, .... For most Mewtwo raids (like the one I did today) Tyranitar is fine. It handles Shadow Ball (about the only strong Pokemon that does), as well as Psychic and Hyper Beam. But Focus Blast utterly destroys Ttar.

Against Focus Blast, best counters are Mewtwo with Shadow Ball, and Gengar with Shadow Ball, then probably Rayquaza (DT/O). So when you need Gengar for Mewtwo, you need it BAD.

I think lots of people are expecting SC Gengar in October, which might mean it will happen, or it might mean Niantic will mess with us and not do it. Plus, G4 may pop by then, and Giratina might be the October surprise. All we can do is speculate at this point.

I cant see gengar being a CD as much as I can see it being a breakthrough, ninantic removed shadow claw most likely to prevent players from getting too many absurdly overpowered gengar, and the perfect way to reintroduce it, albeint more controlled, would be breakthroughs where you get 5 at the most

Hex gets a bad rap. It's fine and it charges Shadow Ball very quickly.

I agree, its one of those things where this great thing got taken away, and people would rather bash something thats not bad just because it isnt 'as good'

People are crazy, no he’s not super relevant and it’s not as good as Shadow Claw but hey. He’s still the best ghost type in the game and fun to use when he can hit SE since he puts a high chunk into enemies. From a super meta standpoint don’t, be patient. If you love Gengar or want to use him power him up! I power up things without optimal movesets or stats and I can still get almost all of the tier 3’s and have good teams for tier 5’s

And sonsidering registeel's trash movesets, a ghost set gengar might just tear into that

Now there's an interesting thought I hadn't considered. Gengar has at least immunity-tier resistance to half of Registeel's current movesets, and Metal Claw isn't all that great on defense. The question of course will be if it can perform well enough to rival the obvious fire and fighting counters. Ground excluded because outside Groudon ground is underwhelming.

If you like using him go for it - candy isn't rare, and dust only takes a bit of grinding. I regularly use a focus blast Gengar just because he's fun even if not optimum.

My level 40 H/SB Gengar is one of my strongest neutral mon - it even made my suggested (Not Recommended!) Jolteon & Zapdos counters from Calcy when I checked for funsies.
