PSA: Gifts cannot be discarded but do not count in bag space.

The guide should mention this. I had to verify it myself as I was worried about managing my bag space.

Are alolan eggs a guaranteed drop from gifts? Also what happens if you get one with 9/9 eggs? I opened one with 9/9 eggs and just got items.

You have to have a free spot for the 7k egg. So open gift when you have spot if you want the 7k egg and your chances are better. Otherwise spin stops and chance "normal" 2-5-10k egg.

Ok thanks. Bit of a stupid system though isn't it? Prevents people from spinning stops until they receive a 7k egg.

Not stupid, IMO, just odd. So if you want Alolan eggs, you spin stops until you get an egg slot open, and then open gifts until you get an Alolan egg, then spin stops, etc. It's about optimizing resource acquisition.

Oooh they should just have 1 dedicated gift egg slot that can't be filled with normal eggs. You shouldn't have to think about whether you should spin a stop or not

Yesterday, I had 0.3KM until hatch, so Iwent walking to hatch the egg to open up a spot for an alolan, I thought I better spin that gym before my egg hatches, I spun the gym and got an egg. Then several seconds after leaving the gym the egg animation started. I had 9 eggs again and started walking with my head down.
