Team got to put pokemon in gym while I was taking it??
I ALMOST took a gym before a Kyogre raid today. Cleared out the first 4 pokemon AND had the last 2 down to 1 battle each when someone started golden razzing them. There were 3 of us taking it though, so we thought we could keep fighting it down and make them hit the berry limit. Then suddenly, when we were pretty sure they had hit the limit and we still had 3 min before the raid, the gym let Mystic put 4 more pokemon in to fill the gym!
I am really confused - I've tried to put pokemon in a gym before that was under attack and was prevented from doing so - why did Mystic get to put in? We never stopped attacking. In fact, I had entered a new battle with the indicator that they only had 2 pokemon in the gym, and then once I killed the two, I was randomly put up against a Blissey.
Any idea what happened? Is there a time limit on the lockout? This felt incredibly unfair - wasted 15+ max potions and revives and didn't fail to take it because we couldn't finish their berry limit, but because a Blissey/Snorlax/Dragonite/TTar got added to the gym when we were almost done taking it.

Well... thanks.
That's got to be the dumbest system I've ever heard of. Literally no point to ever try to take a gym down before a raid then - impossible to beat golden razz's faster than 10min, so if they let you knock a few out, they can replace them and get new razz timers...
Really annoying that Mystic gets to play the game on easy mode...
Sounds to me like you were the one trying to take the gym right before the raid boss took over so you didn’t really have to defend against any attacks AND get the “defender” bonus balls... So, seems like YOU’RE the one trying to play the game on “easy mode”. You’re just pissed that you didn’t get to do your slimy move and steal the gym right before it got shut down for 45 mins...
We started about a half hour before the raid. People showed up about 15 min before and started healing the two Pokemon still left inside that weren't even theirs. Then they got to slot in.
And by easy mode, I meant because Mystic has 90% of the population in my area. It wasn't a big deal having so little allied help before raids, but now to see this is how it works with raids? That's significant reward differences. I can do more damage than them in the raid, and heck my smaller team could even out damage them in total, and we'll still get less balls because they'll always have gym control. Sure, I could randomly take a few gyms and hope a legendary raid spawns on them, but that seems completely impractical.
If I'm willing to show up super early for a raid to try to take the gym, I should have a shot at it. I'm not saying it should be impossible to defend, but you'd think 10 Golden Razz on 6 Pokemon each when it takes 3 iterations to knock out, that's 180 gym battles. That's a long ass time to defend. If you're not around and I get a solid jump start by knocking out 4 defenders before anyone starts defending - I should be rewarded for being the person actually going there early. Not the guy who shows up 15 min later and happens to be on that team that 90% of the players were on. It just seems to matter too much with the best rewards being directly tied to how big your team is.
The people willing to defend a gym for an hour while they have that lvl 5 egg on top (which makes that gym a target) are more derserving of the defender bonus balls than some cry baby who tries to sneak the gym right before hatch and then throws a fit when it doesn’t work... sorry
And then blame it on mystic to boot, like valor and instinct can’t also golden razz gyms and jump in after 10 mins...
*it’s not cheating or anything to try to do this, but don’t complain on here and start blaming if it fails. Just accept that it didn’t work and move on
We started taking it 25-35 min before the raid. No one was there to defend it until we had nearly cleared it. It wasn't a last minute steal, it was a full effort through enemy Golden Razz.
My issue isn't that you can Golden Razz, it's that once we make you use the limit of berries, if 10 min has passed it doesn't matter.
As for the comments on Mystic - obviously it's different in different areas, but here about 90% of the players are Mystic. Almost every gym is always Mystic unless I take it myself - and it's obviously not practical to take every gym hoping a raid will later spawn on it. The players at the raid who "defended" the gym aren't the players who were IN the gym - none of the names were in the raid lobby. It's "easy mode" because they have so many teammates that they'll have every gym by default, and when I take a gym they only need to clear 1 Pokemon, whereas I need to clear 6 (as in, if I take a gym there's a 90 % chance a Mystic finds it next, whereas after Mystic takes a gym it's most likely they'll fill it up before another team comes by).
Then on to team damage. I've been in raids with 14 Mystic and 3 each of Valor and instinct, and Mystic only gets most damage by a small margin. I've also been in raids with 11 Mystic and 8 Valor, and we've done what looks like 70% of the total damage. Which just further goes to say they're playing on easy mode here, they generally don't need to bother with counters or DPS because they have such a big numbers advantage, and when they happen to not actually have that advantage they don't do the damage.
I liked the challenge of beating the bigger team at first, but with gym control giving you extra rewards and balls at raids, it's really an unfair scenario to smaller teams. We're actively there trying to take the gym a half hour before the raid, and randoms not in the gym can show up 15 min before and defend it, then slot their own stuff in.
It wouldn't be a problem if the gym control bonus was if you personally had a Pokemon in the gym. It's a problem when you have expected bigger rewards just because your team is significantly bigger. And again, this is obviously location specific. And when I say problem I don't mean problem really, just that it's definitely easy mode.
Mystic's got it too easy. I sometimes get enraged at how inbalanced the teams ended up too, but I would be bored out of my mind playing blue in my area since yellow is basically non-existant here and I am one of the maybe four red players that carry the whole resistance against the 50+ level 40 blues and their henchmen. Its more fun that way but its needless to say that I am down to a couple potions and revives most of the time and my whole box is a graveyard cause I'll be damned if every single damn thing in my collection doesn't bleed their guts out at least once before getting forgotten forever or dicarded. Heck, I have some Pichu that I've had to toss against gym fillers just so I could stop Blissey from getting auto-selected (yes, it still happens when you have literally nothing else alive and available for battle)
Yellow gyms all around here, however, I have as strong a 40 as anyone in this part of town and I only nominally battle gyms for my color (blue).
One yellow has played two 39s from the start, he drives and takes gyms for an hour every early morning (6am or earlier). He puts 800 and 1000 cp trash in there every time. Others at 8am put a Blissey or other decent defender in at 9am.
I don’t want to drive around doing that when later I need to drive to get to a raid or two. I’m pretty much just raiding for a shiny Kyogre anyway.
I'm typing without an overarching theme, blue just doesn't have a lot of spirit here. Surely there are many blue players here, but I'm doing an EX in 27 min and we have three blue in the Sprint gym that is in a pretty busy area. 2000 Blissey, 2000 Alolan, and my 2888 Gardevoir...they've been there 3hr45min. I wouldn't have bothered to fight it to my color, but cool that someone did...nobody else putting in though
Speak for yourselves guys! It’s alllll valor around here, so it’s tough as a mystic and instinct. It pisses me off that y’all just assume that because they’re the biggest team in total size, that they’re the biggest team in every single town, which isn’t the case. It worked out that valor is the biggest team over here. But yet I have to hear all you people talk about how we’ve got it too easy, when we most certainly don’t!
Strategize. Take out mon one at a time if you can, thus reducing opportunities for GRB. My usual strategy is hit everything once, then do 2 battles (thus eliminating the first pokemon if no GRB are used) on the first pokemon and then 1 battle on the next (leaving 1 battle left on the second pokemon if you stop and rejoin). If they're not watching the gym - and if they're defending to get the defense bonus, they will be watching, so that's just good gamesmanship - you can also typically beat the lag in messages being sent.
What you can't overcome, and IMO you shouldn't be able to without your own, is team coordination, is if they have a Discord or chat so they can notify each other that a gym is being taken.
