So Mega Evolutions...

Does it seem like a good idea to start looking for Mega-capable pokemon *right now*? Im asking because theres an absolute ton of pidgey and weedle, and some others that would take too long to list. Im jyst wondering if it would be a good idea to stock up on candies and good IV ones now or would it just be a waste of balls and time?
(this is all assuming they *would* eventually add megas)

Maybe.

I don't honestly expect them to introduce Mega-Evolution in the game until 2019 at the earliest, but one of my goals in the game is to have a Male and Female (if applicable) Pokémon of each species that is a 100% IV, so that means I am catching any Pokémon that could potentially Mega Evolve. I'm only keeping the best of them, but those "Bests" could be absolute beasts under Mega Evolution.

Okay, maybe not "Absolute beasts", but could be "Viable Pokémon to use in Raids, under Specific Circumstances, like a Mega Pigeot vs a Machamp or a Mega Absol vs non-Focus Blast Alakazam or Gengar" sort of useful way.

Given Mareep's community day move it's a safe bet megas will be introduced when Gen 6 hits the game. I wouldn't sweat the Weedles and Pidgeys right now though since we have yet to see how they'll be implemented.

Any idea how mega-evolutions are likely to work? Will we have to evolve all the way from the base form? Or from an already evolved form? Special item required in order to evolve, or just more candy?

Absolutely no idea.

In the main games, you need a special hold item and the mega evolution is limited one per battle and reverts at the end of the battle.

There are no hold items in Go.

Could maybe spend candy and/or item to unlock an in-battle button like the charge move on a pokemon to allow your pokemon to mega evolve.

I feel like they could be implemented through a future update that would allow Pokemons to hold items, and just release the mega stones through quests

If anything, i think it would be something like either you use an item on it, and the next time you use it in battle it can mega evolve, then after it goes away, something like the evolution items, but not permanent, i think it would be really jerkish to have megas be permanent and be unable to use 2 or more of your best pokemon of the same team ever again,

Why not? You want to catch them anyway for the stardust. The only waste of time is appraising them.
