Planning ahead for new special research
I got burned by the Mew special research. I had just consumed all my magicarp candy evolving 2 gyrados during double XP. To be fair to niantic , they have made magicarp candy really common for the last month so I wasn’t delayed much in the end.
But I have been hoarding candy expensive evolutions since. Not going to evolve wailmer till I can have a spare.
What else are other people doing to prep for the next possible special research tasks? The other thing I’m doing is trying to build up a few gold gyms as I’ve not really bothered over that much before. I think it would be hilarious if “get x gym badges to gold” was a research task. The skirmishes over gym control would become fully fledged wars.
TL;DR
What if anything are the rest of you doing to be ready for the next special research?

It's good that trainers have decided to save candies for the future, but that said the next Special Research, Celebi, will not have a 400 candy evolve as one of its tasks. I'm not sure why so many trainers have latched onto this idea.
The Mew tasks all revolved around introducing new players to key aspects of the game and, most importantly, Gen 1. The Gen 1 event helped a lot with people catching their Mew. While the two gen 3 Mythical pokemon will likely see the 400 candies saved see use and a focus on weather boosted mons, the next one will be focused on Gen 2.
And that begs the question, what should we expect. Catch 10 Dark Pokemon seems likely. Get Gold in your Johto badge, certainly, Catch Unown? I sure hope they up its frequency for a Gen 2 event, I don't even have one.
"next Special Research, Celebi, will not have a 400 candy evolve as one of its tasks". Is this just speculation or is there some (semi)reliable source for this?
For the next special research I hope Niantic will add some tasks that pose a challenge for power players, while being doable for beginners. "Get a new entry to your Pokedex" probably would be too mean, but something like "Collect 10 new arena medals" would be good.
Just speculation based on Mew = Gen1 and Magikarp = Gen 1 + Ditto = Gen 1 + Kanto Medals.
Celebi = Gen2 + No 400 Evolve in Gen2
To me, there is a flaw with this logic. It was 10 Ghost Pokemon, not catch 3 Ghastly. Gen2 and Gen3 Ghosts were part of the Gen1 Mew Special Research Task.
So I don't see why they couldn't make Swablu or Wailmer part of Gen2 one.
Arak is right about how I came to my conclusion. I've also heard this counterargument before. But Niantic likes to make tasks slightly easier (for more casual players) and the 10 ghost prompt was one of the harder ones for most trainers. They could have made it Gastly focused, sure. But it was not strictly gen 1 or not gen 1.
Putting a task like 'Catch 10 Dark Type' in a Mew raid would negate my hypothesis. I say that there can't be an Evolve Swablu or Evolve Wailmer task in the Celebi quest because there are specifically not gen 2. There could be a 'catch 10 steel type' were that task could completely be solved by catching Arons simply because Steel Type was introduced in Gen 2 and not naming a specific mon makes the task slightly easier.
Edit: 'Evolve an Espeon or Umbreon' is a much more likely Task for Celebi.
