Ampharos VS/DP

How well does he perform as a gym defender?

Two advantages that immediately come to mind: 1) two-bar charged move, in contrast with Ampharos' existing options; 2) wide neutral coverage. Otherwise, it's almost as slow and easy to dodge as ZC and FB.

Unless Niantic is planning a buff to DP, or there's some kind of mega-update looming, Ampharos w/ this move is weird. Having said that, I'm not going to pass up this opportunity to stock up on as much Mareep candy as possible.

Ampharos is never going to be a great defender because bulk matters the most and Amphy just doesn't have it, nor does it resist the most common attacker types. It does get points for an amazing quick move and having only a single weakness. DP is a buff, but not that significant of a buff.

I'm just going to fill up my PokéDex this Community Day lol

Given that I'll gather hundreds of candy anyway during those 3 hours, I'll probably evolve a couple of high level ones to have some more ready-to-deploy "rare" defenders. I'm not too bothered if I don't find a high IV one to evolve, as (as it stands now) there won't be any offensive use for it anyway.

I'd put it as A or A-. Althougt FB counters it's common counters (Rhydon and Golem). It's still neutral vs Groudon and quite trivial to dodge. DP will do neutral damage to it's counters it's 2 bars meaning it will be a little bit more deployable. Aswell as more likely to hit.

No, just no, dodging with Mud Shot is easy.

This argument sucks because dodging anything is easy if you're skilled at this. The average player does not dodge quick moves. And especially if the two first volt switches hit you they're going to hurt.

Stop acting like only Blissey and Chansey matter. Every move in this game is dodgeable. Every pokemon is easy to defeat with the proper counters. We all know this. Our task is to make that harder and Ampharos makes it harder than most Pokémon and surely is better than a Tyranitar, a Gyarados or an Aggron that populate gyms.

I've had a 98% maxed out Ampharos for a long time and I never put it in gyms. Dragon pulse will not change this.

If it had discharge, I still don't think I would use it inasmuch as Rhydon and Groudon are perfect counters and they are common.

In addition to what others have mentioned, it also will depend if and how Niantic buffs Dragon Pulse. Reducing the time by .5s or more would bring it into a better position. Dropping it a full 1s to 2.6s, the same as Wild Charge and Grass Knot/Power Whip, could make it amazing.

A reduction in duration is exactly what I was hoping for, but because the announcement doesn't include language about it being changed (the way the Lugia Sky Attack announcement did), I'm not optimistic.
