Does anyone know if PvP is coming? Since the gym rework the only reason I power things up is to solo tier 3's. I feel like PvP would bring me back into paying attention to Pokemon that aren't just good attackers.

Please community, give me hope!

Why would PvP make you pay attention to Pokémon that aren't good attackers? In the absence of a system that forced you to use certain Pokemon, I'd imagine that most PvP would break down into a Rock/Paper/Scissors game where you had only the strongest attackers being used or their most optimal counters being used.

You're about to battle someone, do you bring in a Machamp in case they bring in a Tyranitar? Or do you expect that they are going to bring in a Machamp to take down your Tyranitar, so you bring in your Mewtwo, your Lugia... or maybe your Gengar? (Triple resists Fighting!) Etc.

While I can see PvP adding to the game, I don't see how it would make someone pay attention to a Pokémon like Steelix, or even Ursaring. It seems to me that it would instead just follow the same lines as Raid Battles, where you hyper-focus on the most optimal counters to Raid Bosses rather than going for more interesting matchups (Clefable vs Latios?).

While I wouldn't mind PvP, I'm not sure how it could do anything more than accelerate the current trend to hyper-focus on Attackers, which I think is the main mechanical issue with the game as it stands.

Maybe if it was a 1 vs 1 Battle, but you had 3 Pokémon on your Bench which you could swap out during the match? Maybe 1 switch per match? So you bring a Machamp, a Mewtwo and a Tyranitar, your opponent brings out a Machamp, a Rayquaza and a Gengar, and the match turns into Mewtwo vs Rayquaza? It's still Rock/Paper/Scissors, but at least it's a bit more varied.

You're right in the sense that there will always be some Pokemon that get the shaft, but I feel like having a PvP component to the game would allow for a more varied and interesting experience. It would start with a straight 3mon team vs a 3mon team, but you could have different variants (cp min/max, type/species restrictions, move restrictions, time limits, no time limits, an option for turn-based battles, etc.). Then there'd be a reason to power up the others.

I'm no expert in game design, but the current gym mechanics suck and there's no compelling reason to take a gym with the coin limit and the decreasing motivation.

Mucho frustrating...

Are you kidding me?! PvP is THE ONLY reason why I'm selectively powering up certain pokemon to high levels (not that BS lv30/35 cr@p to be somewhat efficient in raids).

PvP is where all your effort in collecting and power-up pokemon can be showed off. Fighting in raids really doesn't make a difference, you win either way.
Against another person (even at this limited-complexity of battling) every dodge, switch, attack, charge attack, type, level, and weather can be deciding factor whether you win or lose.

You should think a little more about what PvP can be, and not just the raid battle shifted over. You could have different leagues prior to battling.

Types of battles:
Regular battle - would have you and your opponent select whatever 6 pokemon you want.
3v3 - self-explanatory
Opposing battle - Would allow you and your opponent to pick 6 pokemon out of a list of 15 (pre-selected), so you would know what your opponent has, but wouldn't know which of your pokemon are selected by your opponent.
Under 3K - Only pkmn under 3000cp
Under 2K - Only pkmn under 2000cp
Element Only - A random pokemon type is selected so you and your opponent can only fight using pokemon that includes that type(s?) of pkmn.

Like seriously, there are so many exciting ways of battling, and because it'd be something fun, I'm sure Niantic isn't going to do it.

Maybe if (one part of) the PvP was 1v1 of the same species, and there was some sort of global ranking for each species?

Then you could get a much higher ranking with your supercharged Butterfree, than was ever possible with your best Machamp.
