Best fire type to power up
Thanks to the double dust event im in the situation; that I can now take 2 or 3 mons to the level cap without a problem, so I plan on maxing out a fire type; as this niche isnt filled yet in my attacking squad.
The candidates I have are the following ones:
14-15-15 Flareon L30
13-13-15 Moltres L20
15-14-15 Entei L20
15-15-15 Blaziken L13
TMs and rare cany are no problem; they all have the best moveset. Not sure if Blaziken isnt better suited as fighting type attacker, its just a pretty cool mon, but I guess its not good enough to justify putting 280k dust into it... Anyways, which one would you power up? Entei has the higher IV; but Idk if it really offers an upgrade to Flareon, same goes for Moltres actually.

Entei and Moltres are nearly interchangable. Key points to keep in mind:
1. Moltres has a slightly higher attack stat while Entei has slightly more bulk
2. Moltres has a dual typing, which makes him weaker vs e.g. Ice Types while improving his matchup vs e.g. Grass
3. Entei can learn Flamethrower, which makes him better suited for people who like to dodge often (Flamethrower is virtually on par with Overheat but lets you dodge much easier in exchange for slightly less damage
If you've got the dust and rarecandy for it, up one of both. If you've only got dust/rarecandy for one of them, pick the one that's best suited to your playstyle and what you want to use him against. Personally I would recommend Entei since his IV is MUCH better.
And yet with Moltres having "only" A13, the Entei will never be able to get the same DPS.
Regarding ice-types, Regice is the obvious target as an upcoming ice-type legendary and Moltres has better typing there than Entei, because the charge moves are Focus Blast, Earthquake and Blizzard. Moltres has better TDO in 67% of Regice raids despite Entei being naturally bulkier. Unquestionably superior? Just depends on the boss moveset.
Yeah I know, but I was always low on stardust anyway, so I dont mind it. On the other hand I have many nice mons, that I would like to level up all the way and already have one or two of every viable species powered up anyway. I didnt really wanna play this event just to hoard it and push nothing, especially when a need of my squad could be satisified.
Id like to hear the reason, why I should pick Entei over Moltres aswell actually.
Flareon is kinda out of the drawing now.
Generally speaking Moltres>Entei>Flareon. Moltres is #1 DPS, Entei is #1 TDO, Entei and Flareon are tied for #2 DPS.
Depends what you value. Your Entei has extremely good IVs but the Moltres will have better DPS in raids. I would not spend stardust on non-legendary fire-types. May also be better to take both legendaries to 30 before considering maxing one.
I would have to invest rare candy in both to get them to L30, so I honestly dont like that idea.
So it comes down to Entei vs Moltres I think.
How high is the actual difference? I alsp thought about using FT over OH on Entei, because its more efficient to sweep out gyms with it, but Im a bit afraid, the loss in DPS would neutral the advantage from more energy efficient defeating.
Cool to hear. Ill let some calculations run through I guess and see how many seconds I lose vs the big 3 normal type defender, because thats where I think about using Entei too now. We have mostly cloudy weather where I live, so Machamp was the undisputed DPS king/gym sweeper, but as summer approaches and sunny weather will be more common, its nice to have a strong fire attacker for gyms, especially because of the viable HS/DG resistance.
Don't know how much candy you have for them but you will use much less candy taking both to 30. Total 248 candy to take one from 20 to 40, total 132 candy to take 2 from 20 to 30 and you get to fully utilize all candy from catches. Two L30+ mons is much better than one L40 mon.
FT is pretty close to OH, wouldn't worry about the difference. And FT is undoubtedly much better for gyms unless you plan to use Entei for fighting big Blissey/Chansey/Snorlax, which you shouldn't.
Im having 325 rare candy atm, but I have a second 100% Rayquaza (Yeah, Ik, Im one lucky dude) that I would maybe like to max out too, although I already have one there, simply because its 100% and I use the first one all the time, as I dont have a Dnite maxed out.
Id also like to get Groudon from 25 to 31, high enough for me to be usable, but Ill have to invest another 40 rare candy or so.
Not sure, if two L30 ones is better than one L40. Mostly one L40 will be enough to take out a gym and in raids I would always prefer having one maxed attacker for maximal DPS/balls.
Why shouldnt I use it for them? With weather fire types the best DPS options as far as I am aware of it.
With clear weather they become viable, otherwise just use Machamps because they are faster.
Thing is, maxing one does not get you the best increase in DPS usually. The resource cost for the last few levels is huge and often comes with only a barely noticeable improvement in DPS because of breakpoints. Depending on your Moltres/Entei candy amount, you can take both to 34-35 instead of one to 40 for the same RC cost.
Let's take Regice for example:
Moltres gains 2,5% DPS going from 35 to 40. Entei gains 2,7%. If your previous team is made up of say, level 35 Machamps, level 35 Moltres is a 4,3% DPS increase over them. The best thing to do would be to raise as many 35 Moltreses as you can, as the DPS increase of replacing another team member with L35 Moltres is larger than the increase of taking a Moltres from 35 to 40.
Same phenomenon has been observable in for example Lugia and Kyogre raids, where the optimal resource use has been to make many low 30s Raikous instead of anything else.
I like maxing out my mons just like you seem to, but if you are looking for best efficiency, it's better to first take all your battlers to their highest breakpoints and then consider maxing from there.
EDIT: I would be interested in the reason for the downvote.
Wasnt me mate, I gave you the thumb up, as I liked your explanations.
Its a bit fucked up, that it was revealed now, that there will be Moltres as a potential reward for the upcomming quests, but I spend all my rare candy now in both and brought Moltres to 38 and Entei to 36.5 Most likely Ill bring Entei to 38 aswell and leave them both for good.
I envy everyone who has a good Entei. It's just so much better in practice than anything else in the fire world... yes, Moltres has higher DPS, but neutral damage from Ice is really crippling compared to Entei. You can just fire off so many more charged moves that it is worth it.
As of Flareon, you can always have a weather boosted one that will save you a lot of stardust. In the early days when level up was not so fast (i.e. no raids), I used to power up my 80 IV Flareon every time I hit a new level, which was my only good fire type. Then weather boosted came and I caught a high-level one, decent IV, perfect moves, and I turned out to use it more frequently now. All that dust (and TM's) to the trash.
