Wild Pokemon CP?

If I have a 52 CP charmander and I find a 299 CP charmander. If I level them both up will they end up at the same CP? Or will the 299 have a higher cap???? And I'm not just asking about charmander I'm asking about all duplicates I find. And just for question sake they are the same IV. I just wanna know if they would be the same or if it would just be a waste of stardust to level the 52 CP.....

The one with higher IVs will have a higher CP value, otherwise, if they have equal IVs they'll end up with the same CP value

Cool. So it doesn't matter if I keep my starter Pokemon and work on him or wait to find a 900CP they will end up the same? One will just cost more stardust?

Well, from what I know, If the 900CP charmander has better IV's, then the max cp it can have will be higher than your lower IV starter charmander.

So, there's a possibilty that they won't end up the same.
There's also a possibility that your starter charmander has better IV's than the 900cp charmander, which means that the better IV's version will have a higher max CP once you completely max it out at level 40. (I'm not 100% sure on this and would love clarification)

If this is true I will need to rethink a ton of my life choices.

Technically the other answers may be wrong in instances, as the game weighs the attack stat more heavily in determining CP. If a pokemon has greater IV's in all three stat categories, then yes, it will have a higher max CP then another pokemon of the same species. A 15/8/8 A/D/HP could, I guess, have a higher max CP than a 12/10/10 pokemon.

Nice point! But, mathematically speaking, if you consider IVs as a triple (a,b,c), the standard definition of the "greater than" operator in such context says that: ((a,b,c) > (c,d,e)) if and only if (a>c and b>d and c>e).
Considering this, if I didn't oversight anything, every use of the words "higher IVs" leads to true sentences!

The last part was of course my initial understanding as a loose matter of English prior to you bringing up the mathematical understanding of the "greater than" term as an "operator". The two strictures combined mean that at least one of a, b, or c must be higher than its counterpart for the initial statement to be valid.)

Ok, I'll go a little bit deeper into Math! I'm going to use English terms with a mathematical meaning, and to distinguish them I'll capitalize them.

When we want to compare two Vectors, what we are trying to do is to put an Order onto a Vector Space.
In our case the Vector Space is R^3.
When talking about Orders, we should distinguish between Partial Orders, and Total Orders.
An Order is Total when, whichever pair of Vectors you take, you can always decide which element of the pair is greater than the other. Otherwise, the Order is said Partial.
To establish an Order onto a Set, you can simply define the "greater than" Operator.

For example, my previous definition of "greater than" gives a Partial Order on the Vector Space, because (5,0,0) and (0,5,0) are not comparable. Neither is greater than the other.

Your definition of "greater than" gives a different Partial Order, which is correct and is more a "greater than or equal to".

Generally speaking, when you have a structure with no natural total order, you analyze the context to determine an Order good enough to compare the elements of your structure.

Back to your question, if a Pokémon only had one higher IV, and the other were equal, I would still say it had higher IVs, if I'm referring to the common sense and common use in English of the word "greater".

In many mathematical contexts, instead, that definition of "greater than" is considered too weak, and the definition I gave is preferred.

In our context however the definition is not set in stone!
We could say that (a,b,c) > (d,e,f) when (a,b,c) give a higher CP value than (d,e,f), but, because of the CP formula, it can happen that (10,2,2) > (2,2,10) is true for a certain Pokémon species and false for another!
We could use the lexicographical order (check Wikipedia!).
