Movesets (Alakazam)

Level HP ATK DEF Total Calc. CP
20 13 14 13 (88.9%) 1622

Fast Move: Psycho Cut
Charge Move: Focus Blast

Dilemma as to what direction to take it.

I have an alternate Alakazam with PC / FS

If treated like a lesser Mewtwo, one would think Alakazam's Confusion / FB moveset is viable, but that set has a C grade on its page.

So I think I should charge TM, and stick with whatever I get on the first try. FS and SB each have their strengths.

Thoughts?

Personally, I would aim for future sight on your Zam. Let it be the psychic glass cannon it's meant to be. 😁

The only reason focus blast and shadow ball are viable on Mewtwo is because Mewtwo's only STAB charge move is psychic, which is a fairly underwhelming charge move. If Mewtwo was able to learn future sight, then the other two options would become borderline obsolete.

Future Sight would not obsolete FB and SB Mewtwo's specialist uses. SB is used for countering psychics (which FS obviously would suck at) while FB hitting normals for SE is much better than FS hitting them for neutral.

That's why I said *borderline* obsolete. 😉

Also, we already have Tyranitar and Machamp for destroying other psychic types and normal types. The only reason shadow ball and focus blast get used on Mewtwo is because psychic is a very lackluster charge move. If Mewtwo could learn future sight, that would be the overall optimal charge move, hands down.

I would personally not invest significant resource into that Zam. You could catch a level 30+ Abra from the wild and evolve it to a useable level from the get go, which also potentially saves your TMs. Or you could raid another Zam with better IVs or with already the correct moveset.

As for the actual movesets, Future Sight all the way. FB Alakazam is lackluster compared to Machamp, Hariyama and Mewtwo, while SB Alakazam is so much behind Gengar, Mewtwo and even Banette that it's usually not worth considering at all.

Mewtwo with Focus Blast performs relative to Machamp with its best set, whereas Alakazam is a direct downgrade from both these, having less bulk and damage numbers, which is probably why that combo is rated kind of poorly.

Your Alakazam isn’t terrible, but honestly, I wouldn’t quite invest in it unless you find them hard to come by.

Not investing. Level 20 Alakazams aren't much when you can catch level 30 or above Abras easily in windy weather. Does your area have windy? Also the IVs are mediocre to deserve a power up from 20, if it's 30 or above it's still worth considering. so again, not investing.

Unfortunately, windy weather is hard to come by, it was a rare treat that I saw weather boosted Rayq Raids for one day last week / nevertheless out of 5 raids only caught one WB Rayq. [Central Florida]

Abra spawn sporadically so I have a greater chance IV wise of a Lvl 20 egg hatch (significant candy investment - cmon Rare candies on an Abra?) or a Raid (also with its troubles, I'm unable to Solo a Zam - I lack in numbers Tyranitar and Houndoom, and cmon If I had a Mewtwo, you think I'd be posting here about the merits of a Zam?)

But I digress, no one's argued thus far the pro cons of a SB Zam, though I'm getting vast majority of you that say FB Zam is a definite No because for that niche, I'm better off using Machamps.
