What is Groudon’s use?

Aside of grass “specialist”
I see many players have one maxed, it is cool, a giant earth dinosaur ? but still I don’t think it’s necessary in the metagame

It does form part of my thunder (or even the other two movesets) Kyogre roster and its very good at that.

After Kyogre leaves though... yeah, there's nothing. For gyms, you can't hit dragons and garys with it, and it is pitifully slow at taking down blissey (assuming you're using earthquake), it might be even worse than Ttar.

Will be MVP should raikou decide to return though.

It actually has better neutral DPS with SoB so I'd keep that until an electric target comes along.

Articuno, Raikou and Mewtwo are the only Legendaries, I feel, worth investment. Even then, there are equitable alternatives to all Legendaries.

In short: Legendary cost of investment > Drop off in production from alternatives.

Why Articuno though? True the next best option for ice is some distance away, yes, but I think most players can fill out two, if not three teams of lapras, jynx, cloyster, walrein or piloswine to wreck Rayquaza.

I don't think most players have a 12 Rhydon roster for any future electric legendary raids yet (or raikou returning), nor do they have a 12 Gyarados roster to not need Kyogre.

Full disclosure: I am team mystic, love Articuno, and I am actually in the process of maxing one, but just why? Lol

I have so much rare candy and will probably max my 87 for Rayquaza because it’s a top tier counter for that raid boss and overall best ice type.

When I checked the sims for Articuno vs Rayquaza, it didn't get much better at any point between Lv 30 and Lv 40. It was still one of the best options vs all movesets, but maxing seems like wasted resource. You could easily power up 3 articuno to Lv 30 for the cost of 1 at Lv 40.

Articuno has a frost breath breakpoint in the high 30s. A level 30 won’t outperform my piloswine Dragonite and jynx, Lapras etc.

Articuno gets completely obsoleted in the next gen by Mamoswine assuming it gets a double ice moveset. Weavile and Glaceon will also be better ice-type DPS given a double ice moveset. That said I think powering up Articuno solely for Rayquaza raids isn't the worst if you raid a fair bit, I know I will do it.

Kyogre and Groudon will never be obsoleted, anything that competes with them will at most be slightly better and more likely will be slightly worse, so I'm pretty sure they should be on the list.

I have two maxed, they were a top counter vs Groudon and are a top counter vs Kyogre and will be a great counter in many legendary raids in the future.

With SoB, it's very effective against Omastar raid boss.

It's actually a decent Mewtwo counter. Pokebattler ranks MS/SB 9th best against Mewtwo when weather is not considered. WF/HP Kyogre is ranked 12th.

Now, if it is raining, Kyogre becomes 4th best and in clear weather Groudon becomes 4th best. So, unless you have enought Mewtwo, Tyranitar and Houndoom to fill all your slots for the EX Raid, you might want to consider these two Legendaries.

Though Kyogre is more useful in the Meta as well as in neutral situations, I feel that, in general, Clear Weather is more common than Rainy. This, and Groudon's quick moves are much better options for dodging (at the expense of much slower charge moves). Altogether, somewhat closing the gap between the power of Kyogre's moves over Groudon,

We hardly get clear/sunny weather here, mostly cloudy and rainy. But in reality, the weather is often clear/sunny.

That's why Cacnea is almost unseen here.

Here I go. Just moments after I typed that comment.
But it's still quite rare here.

PS: It's raining cats and dogs IRL.

Groudon is an incredible generalist, and specifically a great counter to Rock given that it resists Rock moves, Electric moves, and isn't vulnerable to steel moves.

Lots of future raid bosses are weak to ground. That's where it comes in handy.
