Steelix TDO as a Defender: Iron Tail vs Dragon Tail

I have a 2244 CP, 14-13-15 Steelix with Iron Tail and Heavy Slam. I only use it for gym defence, in relatively high-turnover areas. Would it be worthwhile to use a FTM on him, and have a DT/HS combo instead? Would that have a better impact on his damage output as a gym defender, especially bearing in mind the fact that typical Steelix counters resist steel moves?

Note that I’m not exactly swimming in FTMs (or CTMs, for that matter), so I will only use one on him if it would have a significant marginal impact on performance. I’ve been toying with this idea for quite some time and don’t think I’ll independently come to a conclusion, ever. I need a prod one way or the other.

GamePress has both IT/C and DT/C listed as the best movesets for Steelix as a defender. Though, I'd say DT/C would be a better option for Steelix for neutral coverage against Pokemon that can counter him and resist his Steel-type moves. You should also consider which quick move you would want to give your Steelix depending on what weather you normally get. If it's usually windy around you, DT would probably suffice. If it's snowy, then IT.

SIDENOTE: Rayquaza is most likely around the corner, so that means Steelix and Aggron will most likely be the best counters to the legendary dragon. Steelix will probably be able to put in maximum damage output against Rayquaza with DT/C, so also consider this, as well.

Perhaps I'm reading your post wrong (which is entirely possible since it's late and I'm tired lol), but I'd be a bit surprised to see Steelix or Aggron as top counters for Rayquaza. I could see them doing well in terms of TDO given their bulk and resistances. In terms of DPS performance though, I imagine pretty much any ice type Mon would outperform them, along with Dragonite, Golem, Mewtwo, (maybe even Gardevoir?) etc.

Nope, you read it just fine haha. You might just be right about that. It might also depend on what Rayquaza's moveset is. If, for instance, it had a double Flying-type moveset, Golem will probably serve as the best counter for that specific moveset.

Aggron makes an appearance on PokeBattler's raid rankings against Rayquaza, but not Steelix. I'm guessing Steelix's attack is just too low.

In my opinion, I'd leave your Steelix the way it is. Dragon Tail will give Steelix better neutral damage coverage (and a nasty surprise for the player who tries to sweep the whole gym with Dragonite), but at the cost of STAB. And given that Steelix isn't known for hitting all that hard anyways, I'd say that TMing it would be a mild upgrade, at best. And since you're not swimming in TMs, I'd advise against the moveset change.

To me, Steelix has two jobs when placed in a gym: be obnoxious/waste the attackers time, and decay at a slower rate then the big fat Blisseys, Snorlaxes, and Slakings. Regardless of it's quick move, it should achieve that goal just fine.

P.S. if you do decide to TM your Steelix, it might not bad a bad idea to aim for Dragon Tail/Crunch, as that's probably the most obnoxious moveset to fight against.

Use a pidgey and don't waste tms on gym defenders

Try using a pidgey defender here
Nobody will care to feed your pidgey if the gym gets attacked. If it's the first defender, you might get shaved off before you can even get 3 coins. Even a trash defender in the 2nd slot runs a risk of getting shaved, while the shaver feeds the 1st defender.

Speaking of this, Blisseys below 2k CP often get shaved, the justification being "Oh, I'm gonna put a 3.1k Blissey, so I'm doing the entire gym a favour."

Just evolve a new one.

Leave it as it is, it can be used against Gardevoir, when prestiging comes back.

Machamp is the most typical Steelix counter and does not resist steel moves, so there is that. Then again if someone brings a fire or water type to the fight, DT would be much better.
I consider FTM to be pretty cheap since they drop so much more often from raids, but it comes down to how many you have. It's a decent upgrade but not as great as FTMing Blissey, Snorlax or Chancey.

I always use 100% Steelix as a defender with DT/HS and leaving it the way it is :) 1. it has slightly higher EPS. 2. stupid people always using dragonite get hit harder :D 3. clever people using strong Fire DPS - have resistance to steel

I’d rather use water > fire to also get the SE damage & to also resist steel (just as fire does, for both) and not risk going against EQ

from now on maybe yes, but water was slower and revives everywhere:) but since waterfall and then kyogre came I agree. nevertheless, DT/HS has small advantage

I thought of that when replying, but then opted to continue to add that because of the occasional dodge bug glitch.

Good point about Moltres!
If I were to nitpick, what proportion of players do you think have theirs powered up, in favor of vapes/gyarados’s/kyogres?

What's a "significant marginal" impact?

In this situation I use the term 'marginal impact' to refer to the impact on TDO from a switch between IT and DT; a significant marginal impact is one where the marginal impact of the proposed switch, on TDO, is large. I don't know if your comment was supposed to be a snarky response to my question. Either way: https://www3.nd.edu/~rwilliam/stats3/Margins02.pdf for a bit more information on 'marginal effects'.

Any choice you make is going to have its good and bad match-ups. As long as you don't have Earthquake as a Charged move, you're probably good.

I chose Crunch because it goes off more frequently and more quickly and attackers might get hit by a couple in their haste to power through an annoyingly bulky Pokemon.
