Dragonair just ran away from me

I saw this on the nearby at a pokestop and ran as fast as I could outside my house to catch it but then I realized I have no berries just ultra balls so I spin the 2 pokestops close to it but no luck. It ran away after 10 tries with just throwing ultra balls.

I don't have a Dragonite yet and this was the first shadow in a long time. I'm really sad but I just tell myself it wasn't meant to be.

I know this is not a question I just wanted to vent somewhere sorry.
It also doesn't help that it's -16 C here in Canada :( My fingers were literally frozen trying to catch it.

Anyone want to share their experience?

Edit: Thanks for all the stories guys. It made my night reading your funny encounters xD

I feel your pain! but that's why i always have berries and ultra balls in stock, that's how i captured my very first Dragonite weeks ago, i was waiting for me right next to a Gym, but level has a lot in play when trying to catch a pokemon higher than your level, i was an i'm still lvl 30 when i captured Dragonite. what lvl are you?

Yah I should've been more prepared but I'm constantly low on razz berries all the time idk why. Congrats on catching your first Dragonite! How many tries did it take you?
I'm also level 30 haha

wow can't believe it, i thought you were lower lvl and that's why Dragonair runaway! in my case it was 2 great curve ultraballs tries with raspberrys. But I was a Dragonite lvl15, I lvl up to lvl 26 so far (2600CP).

Probably because I didn't have razz berries and also bad luck. I threw two great curve ultra balls but sadly wasn't good enough.

Nice!

Aww man that sucks :(
How many tries did you get before it ran away? Just want to know in case I run into one so I know what to expect

Pretty many, probably close to 10, sadly ran out of Ultra balls. Even an excellent with great balls didn't do it. :(

It hurts, doesn't it? T_T
Hopefully your next Snorlax will be even better!

2500 Snorlax here. Fleed after just first throw

Two weeks ago I saw a Dragonite in the nearby tracker. Jumped in my car and got to the stop in time. To my amazement, it had 2700+ CP, the strongest Pokémon I've ever seen in the wild by a large margin. After about 10 shots it poofed. At least my son caught his, which had 2000 CP, SW/DP, 50 IV.

Last month the same thing happened with a 2100 Lapras, which fled after just one ball! I really wished I had caught those two.

Wow 2700+ CP is crazy for a wild spawn I've never encountered anything that high before.
Hopefully you have better luck next time. I feel we should get at least 3 tries with rare Pokemon haha

I randomly ran into a 78% 800CP Dragonite while on a gym run with my buddy. Caught it on the second attempt, while his 2900CP lvl 30 Dragonite ran off after the third ball. I haven't dared mention it to him since, I think he still regards it as "the one that got away"

Up

Haha that's so funny. Sometimes I think it's better if the rare Pokemon is lower level because catching a lvl 30 Dragonite just seems impossible.
Hopefully your friend isn't too sad but yah I wouldn't mention it for a while xD

I'd suggest you to walk Dratini, to stockup...
Pikachu is not very useful...

I already have enough dratini candy to evolve a Dragonite I'm just waiting for a good IV one. Right now I'm just walking Holiday Pikachu so it'll sit on my shoulder for fun xD

Sad to hear you didn't succeed in catching that Dragonair! In such unlucky cases I always convince myself afterwards that it probably had bad IVs or bad moveset. Not sure if it's any comfort to you right now though :)

I once encountered a 2000cp Dragonite which due to cold fingers (Only -10C, but still), laggy phone and some poor throwing, managed to slip past or break out of the 28 Ultraballs I threw at it. As I was low on pokeballs in general, I actually managed to completely run out of pokeballs during the intense battle.

Running from the Dragonite to refill my bag was the only possible option at that time. Luckily there were 2 pokestops close by, which granted me 5 great balls and 7 pokeballs. Safe to say, I must have looked like a complete idiot chasing around the corner for those pokeballs, and then luckily coming back in time to see the Dragonite still hadn't despawned.

After having sworn at myself for not being able to catch it with the 5 greatballs, I actually caught it with the second pokeball with a perfectly curved "Great" throw hitting inside the circle (Raspberry probably helped a bit too). I couldn't believe my luck, since I've had Dragonites escape after throwing only 2 ultraballs earlier.

Adding to the luck, one of the pokestops also yielded a 10km egg which later hatched into a 89% IV Lapras.

I'm sure you will get new chances to get your Dragonite if you hang in there. Bad luck evens out over time, and it sounds like you live in an area where you might get some great spawns eventually.

That's what I tell myself too QQ
Wow props to you for running to those pokestops to get balls in -10 C weather. I'm glad you got it in the end though plus a Lapras! Maybe the Pokemon gods saw you run and decided to reward your efforts haha.
Yah I'm not losing hope I'll keep checking that pokestop periodically from now on :D

That would probably be wise, my neighbourhood has shown that good spawnpoints will sooner or later spawn something great again. I have previously caught a 2300cp Dragonite and had a 900cp Dragonite escape, just 200 meters from where I caught this one (a park in the old town district with some ruins of a 12th century cathedral). It seems like a great area for rare spawns, I even caught a 600cp Snorlax there once.

I'm not superstitious, but I definitely think all the running made me deserve to catch that Dragonite, and the Lapras is just the icing on the cake. Perhaps this is the time to start worshiping the pokemon gods and pray I will finally hatch that Tangela before 5km eggs are flooded with gen2 pokemon.

Same with my neighbourhood it's mostly common spawns but once in a while something rare pops up. I've caught a 1600 Snorlax around my house before the new tracker rolled out so I guess I'm lucky in that sense.
But your area seems amazing for rare spawns. What country are you in?

Haha yes we must also worship the RNG gods as well. I pray you get your Tangela soon!

I have caught 2 dragonairs but the only Dragonite I have seen in the wild fled me...I still remember the day like it was today, I was level 29, the Dragonite Cp was ???, I throw 10 ultra balls at him with raspberry, 8 of them great throw and all curved, on the 11th he ran away from me, I only screamed once, S...T!! After looking my diary and see it's real CP it really made me very very sad, it was a 2770 Dragonite!

The only good thing that I have catched around that CP is a 2550 Snorlax, but with lick/earthquake and only around 50% IV :(

Never seen Lapras in the wild or another Dragonite

Damn that blows you even hit 8 great ultra curve balls to catch it. I think luck isn't on our side though your Dragonite was really strong. But hey that Snorlax has high CP even if it has bad IV and moveset it's still pretty good to place in gyms.
Dragonite and Lapras are really rare but if you keep playing I'm sure you'll encounter one soon :)

After three months of playing the first Dragonite I ever saw in the wild on the "nearby" thing. I ran around like crazy and almost got run over by a bus till I finally found him in a corner of a park. It was 2.000ish. I gave him a berry, ultraball spinning like crazy in a curve around the moon and back hit him right on the nose. He jumped out and ran away.

Up

This is crazy, I think berries should guarantee at least some more tries to catch it, if you throw a berry at least do not run on the first shot.

Omg stay safe friend but yah I know that desperate feeling of catching a rare Poke. It feels really bad when they flee on the first ball especially when you ran like hell to find it.

Man that is too bad. I hate it when rare pokemon run away. Yesterday I had dratini run off my tracker because I could not cross the train tracks in time.

I had a wild snorlax run from me and a wild lapras, too.

Bulbasaur running away during the Halloween event made me sad.

Anyways, I am sure you will see another one eventually and will definitely get it next time.

maaan, i lost the ONLY dragonite that i ever seen at lvl 16, i dont had ultra balls at time and he ran on the very first great ball. I almost didn't went to work that day, but i remembered that i need to pay my bills xD. i share your pain

Up

It seems like a lot of people have Dragonite break out on the first ball even with using ultra balls haha
Hopefully you've reached or will reach lvl 20 soon so that you'll have a better chance at catching it next time.

LOL gotta pay dem bills I agree xD

My nemesis is Pinsir! Berries, great balls, ultra balls..... I find myself wasting lots because he repeatedly breaks out. Even being level 30 hasn't helped me. And I swear the balls don't throw the same against him because curveballs rarely hit and/or don't go far enough. Had a 2245 Pinsir break out of 4 berry/ultra balls this morning before running. (And Scyther isn't much better)

Up
0
Down

Yes! Some Pokemon stand so far back you're just trying to land a ball let alone get a great or excellent throw.
Sometimes after wasting what feels like 20 balls or more I wanna give up but I'm stubborn so I keep trying anyway xD

Up
0
Down

Too bad! With CP 890 it was between a 89% LvL 20 and a 16% Lvl 23.
The probability to catch it with a great Ultra is between 15 and 20 % per throw. A curve ball would increase that to about 25%. A straight throw with a razberry would have had a 22% chance. A berry adds only about 5 percentage points to the overall chance.
So maybe you should focus on throwing great curveballs with frozen fingers! ;)

I did manage to get two great throws using an ultra ball with curve out of my 10 tries but I think it wasn't my night. Thanks for the interesting statistics!

Sorry to hear that, I know the feeling.

Some time ago I was missing Pinsir in my Pokedex and had never even seen one. Suddenly one popped up close to where I live. So despite the fact that it was pouring down rain and the wind made the rain go sideways I still ventured out on my Pinsir quest.

After I was soaking wet and freezing cold I found it, only to have the game give me an error and then it was gone.
I uttered some bad words I didn't even think I knew.

My last nightmarish Pokemon encounter was with a Dragonite. Never seen one and I am far from getting one.
I walked for several minutes before finding it (thank God the game didn't have this new Nearby tracker then, because I wouldn't have found it).

I then proceded to feed it with Raspberry after Raspberry and throwing Ultra ball after Ultra ball.
I spent 30+ Ultra balls and a shitload of Raspberries, only to see it run away.
I think I lost part of my soul that day.

Damn rain and wind I think is worst then trying to catch it in snowy weather you truly are a trooper.

Yes same! I think we all lose a bit of our soul every time a Pokemon we really want runs away :'(
Thanks for sharing your story it was fun to read haha

I'm so sorry buddy. I thought it was very sweet that you apologised for not asking a question. You must really have been in pain!!!
And I am really scared of the cold- it doesn't get much below -5C here ever so I really felt sorry for you about the cold as well.

Up

Yeah I did feel pretty bad afterwards but hearing all the stories from everyone cheered me up.
-5 C is still pretty cold. I live in Canada so it's just expected that our winters are harsh but it won't stop me from playing PoGo. Just gotta try to keep warm :)

It was 11:59 pm and i saw a spinarach. I gave it a berry, then regular ball as it was only 200-300cp. Its jumped out, then I did the same thing again. It stayed in the ball for at least 15 SECONDS! It was then 12:00 am. It popped out and fled... That's just one of those things y know. No next day bonus for me :(:
