Impossible to anwser without the levels of both mons

Not "impossible". If OP is not specifying level, assume they are the close to the same level (my default is to assume level 20 egg hatches) or OP has enough stardust and candy to burn on either.

Or include that in your answer "Foo is better than Bar, but they are close so if the other was caught at a higher level it can do."

Lapras all the way especially with Ice Beam. It's a tank.

Walrein’s access to only one-bar charge moves does kind of stink

I think multibar moves are more important for glassy Mons. Walrein is rather tanky like Lapras and should be able to get off its charge move(s) before fainting. In the old gym era, I used my Laprases a lot and I dont think Blizzard was inferior to Ice beam when attacking stacks of Dragonites

I’m thinking multi bar moves for a player versus player (future) context; we shall see

Disagree - while Lapras is a tank, if you want to use it for raids, Walrein has higher DPS and lower tankiness, which allows for more total damage. But they are pretty close in terms of the overall stats.

I think they are pretty equal, with an edge to Walrein (which is rather pitty considering how easy it is to obtain Walrein compared to Lapras). Walrein is slightly less tanky but have considerably better attack stats than Lapras.

As the newest articel suggests, with ice types it's pretty much a wash between the 5 options. If i remember correct Walrein is only strictly better than Pilowswine statwise while the others alle have one stat going for them, but then pilowswine has the better moves, so just take your highest ones into the fight against rayquaza after your articuno.

And piloswine evolves into a beast next generation :3

AND piloswine is
- neutral to ice and rock,
- is immune to electricity
- but weak to water;
whereas the water/ice hybrids
- are weak to electricity,
- double resist ice (the same as an immunity essentially)
- weak to rock
- resist water

But yes the points you have made supersede mine in terms of relevance

Do we know the moves rayquaza will get (or latias and latios for that matter)? That will of course determine if Pilowswine will get an advantage over the others or not. If a great dust investment is a factor then pilowswine gets the edge for his future evolution.

It currently has flying, dragon, and rock type moves, but that could change at anytime really.

Walrein has high base attack, and is still fairly tanky. There are several other ice pokemon with similar attack but are a lot less HP or are legendary.

Lapras is even more tanky, but has lower attack. When exploiting a double weakness for attacking a gym, Lapras' attack is good enough and allows for less healing with one max potion at the end. For a raid boss weak to Ice, Walrein with higher attack might serve better, but you are going to need more attackers anyway and Lapras's tankiness might help prevent the dodge bug for longer.

They are pretty equal, although Walrein is only good at Ice attacking while Lapras can become a water attacker too.

But Lapras is outclassed big time as a water type (Walrein too, though), but not as an ice type. You shouldn't really talk about the ice/water hybrids as water types.

OT: I'd say Walrein is better due to its stats. But that might be my opinion as I never had a proper Lapras to begin with and therefore didn't get to test it...

At least Lapras learns good water moves like Surf and Hydro Pump. Walrein? WATER PULSE! Water Pulse is among one of the worst water charged moves in the game for attacking.

True, but Walrein has a much higher attack stat. Waterfall is also much better for gym defense.

Wait why are we talking about this

I wouldn’t use much dust on Walrein unless you don’t see many Spheals. I’ve already caught nearly 400, including some above 750 CP that evolve into 2350 Walreins with no dust needed. Pokebattler has it neck and neck with my powered up Lapras on Rayquaza raids.
