What has better xp/hour - gym battling or spin and catch?
I'm looking for some math analysis or a spreadsheet. Intuitively, I think spin/catch wins, but don't have data to support that belief.
Assume:
- No event giving bonus XP
- No lucky egg.
- You have an adequate supply of revives, pokeballs, and potions. Your XP/hr won't be reduced by lack of supplies.

Not including raiding as part of the analysis, since doing one costs 100 coin.
Even so, I doubt it would be competitive - you have to drive there, wait 10 minutes for the late-comers, 120 seconds in lobby, battle, by the time you're done, you're lucky to be done in under 20 minutes. In that time, you could catch at about 30 mons for about 6,000 xp, with no coin outlay, or 12,000xp if you drop a lucky egg, costing 80 coin.
Answering my own question. Did the rough math.
With the following assumptions, you would earn 21,200XP per hour using spin and catch:
- Catch a poke every 45 seconds for an average of 160xp
- Spin a stop every 64 seconds for 50xp each.
- 14% of all catches get evolved later, worth 500xp each.
(Note: I'm not counting the evolve time, since I do that at home on my couch while watching TV - I consider that time "free")
In contrast, beating a 6-slot gym three times to bring it down earns 1,950xp, assuming all the mons are motivated enough to need 3 kills each.
I don't know how long it takes for me to bring down a 6-slot gym like that, but for it to match the 21,200XP/hour of spin and catch, I'd have to bring one down every five and a half minutes. I know it would be highly unusual for me to bring down a fully motivated, 6-slot gym in five minutes. So, spin and catch wins.
My main farming area has around 8 gyms and about a dozen stops in close proximity. When I show up to farm, and the gyms are not my team (and there aren't lures up), I make a few rounds just farming and catching with my plus, then when the spawns decrease, I knock down and claim all the gyms, and by that point a lot of pokemon will have started to spawn again.
