Is soloing Gengar worth the effort?

This is really two questions:

1. How would extra Gengars benefit my attacking lineup?

In Singapore, legendary raids are very frequent and almost always attract large crowds. As I no longer spend real money on the game, the opportunity cost that I incur from soloing Tier 3 raids would be fewer TMs and Rare Candy from fewer legendary raids. (This is why I only did one Scyther solo and immediately evolved my L25 87% prize.)

I already have a L30 14A/14S/10D Gengar with Hex/SBall and a L24 non-wonder Gengar with SC/SBall, but rarely send them to battle. Dodging is not easy, especially on a three-year-old iPad Air. Thanks to the Halloween event (and eggs), I have five wonder Gastlys and more than enough candy. That Gengars caught through raids will not have SC does not inspire me.

In contrast, Machops are rare here and before yesterday, I had only one Machamp, earned by farming a Machop nest and walking a Machop for 200km. Machamp is among the most valuable non-legendary attackers in the game; having more will make a huge difference when battling Normal-type tanks for gym coins or even trying to earn another Tyranitar.

2. How close am I to a successful Gengar solo?

According to the Gengar Solo Raid Guide, SP/FB is easier. I have seven attackers listed in the guide, but Tyranitar may not be viable against FB:

L30 13A/15D/13S Tyranitar with Bite/Crunch
L30 14A/14D/10S Gengar with Hex/SBall
L30 15A/15D/14S Alakazam with Conf/FS
L30 13A/15D/15S Alakazam with PC/FS
L30 12A/15D/14S Espeon with Conf/FS
L30 13A/14D/13S Exeggutor with Conf/Psyc
L30 14A/11D/15S Dragonite with DT/OR

Once Groudon raids end, I will power up my best one and use Charged TMs if necessary (currently have a 14A/13D/15S with MS/FireB). Of course, I will farm and walk Ralts, but DG is a far more useful and flexible charge move for Gardevoir.

Gengar's aren't all that great when they don't have Shadow Claw unfortunately.

They're just easy to do and the psychic counters that work against Machamp also work against Gengar, so if you already happen to have the counters to Gengar and you've got a free pass still not being used, you may as well do it for the rewards.

Tyranitar is fine against Focus Blast. Even if you don't dodge it, Tyranitar still puts out a high amount of damage. Just think of it as a glass cannon.

Personally I find Gengar even easier than Machamp since Tyranitar resists all but one of Gengar's moves, and Focus Blast is a 1 bar move that has a long damage delay so it's easy to dodge, the only issue with the move is being dodge-glitched.

That team should be more than fine against Gengar.

I completely disagree that "Gengar's aren't all that great when they don't have Shadow Claw", what makes gengar a great attacker against psychic types is his awesome charge move shadow ball + stab. If he has shadow claw or hex or sucker punch, it doesn´t matter, hex and sucker punch load his charge move even faster, although shadow claw gives a little more damage as a fast move.

Soloing alakazam for example, what makes you beat the boss or not with confusion is fire 2 shadow balls instead 1, and to get it, you need a gengar at level 40 with 15iv Def and at least 13iv HP regardless his fast move. A level 40 Gengar with these IVs can take 4 confusions with no dodge and without faint.

Imho, Gengar got buffed recently.
Well, sort of and not only him.

A lot of so called glass-canons have been dismissed as part of a raidgroup for it was important to get through a raid with just one team.
That changed.
From what i can see looking left and right while tapping my screen and from what i learn talking with other trainers after raids, not too many have realized that oportunity and try to take advantage of it.

At least for one of the oncomimng raidbosses i prepare a first squad that will surely die pretty fast but should improve my TDO.
In rare raids i want to get every extraball i can get.

Cheers

Yes, Gengars are very useful. It's pretty hard to solo Alakazam without one or two in the lineup.

Soloing T3's is fun, and Gengar, despite theoretically being one of the easier T3's, is more of a challenge than some of the others because of the variety of its movesets.

With T3 rewards having been buffed (at least in terms of TM's), the more T3's you are capable of soloing, the better.

Cloudy weather is very common in Singapore. Try to find a Gengar raid to solo in cloudy weather to catch a L25 boosted Gengar.

That's what I'm trying to do now, but unfortunately I haven't encountered any Gengar raids in cloudy weather. I have done and caught a boosted Machamp (boss moveset C/CC) in cloudy weather though.
