It’s not only the hicks here in America that refer to our country as "America", it’s pretty much all of us, including the non-hicks such as myself. We use "U. S." and "America" pretty much interchangeably, though as a denomonym, we just use "American". I’ve never heard anyone, including people from other countries, try to include the U. S. or United States part when they refer to people or things from the USA.
I’m aware that people in some places outside of the USA use "America" to refer collectively to both continents. We aren’t taught that here in America. And you know what? They’re not wrong...and neither are we.
It always amuses me when people from outside the USA make fun of Americans by saying we think we're so important and smart and better than everyone else, and then they go on to presume they know what we're all like. They don’t realize the irony in that their presumptive arrogance makes them just as bad as what they accuse us of being.
