Gyarados Question

I'm a suburban player, level 31, with two DT/O gyaradoses. One is 2784 CP 14/10/14 ads (lvl 30.5), and the other is 2606 CP 10/14/14 (lvl 28.5). I have only one good water attacker, a 2729 15/14/12 (lvl 31) AT Vaporeon. Do I TM one of my Gyaradoes and hope for HP? I rarely raid and have no TMs currently. Also, Magikarps are fairly uncommon in my area.

Thanks!

No disrespect, but in my (and many others') opinion, DT/O doesn't make a lot of sense on a Gyarados. If you want to fight Dragonite, you might as well use Ice, or once Gen3 comes out, Gardevoir might be very good at that too. DT/HP, Bite/HP, and Bite/Crunch (no STAB but fairly effective against Psychic and Ghost) all have their uses.

Further it is speculated that Gyarados might get Waterfall as a water based quick move, which would make Waterfall/Hydro Pump a really strong water attacker. But Gyarados may also lose Hydro Pump and get Aqua Tail in which case new Waterfall and legacy Hydropump would be the best moveset. Of course, they could also nerf Hydro Pump and buff Aqua Tail or Water Pulse, so nothing is certain. But having at least one Gyarados with Hydro Pump is good insurance against the move becoming legacy. If you can get a CTM and don't have somewhere else to use it, Gyarados to get HP might be a good option. But if you don't raid much, you might want to save a CTM for when you get Tyranitar with Fire Blast, Mewtwo with Hyperbeam, or something similar where there's one substandard charged move and you get it.

In that case, best advice is to try and find a Magikarp nest and move in there for the next few weeks, catching like crazy, using pinap berries on every 'karp, and hoping to get 400 candy and a good evolution candidate. Magikarp nests are usually near streams and rivers. There's a couple right near me, an old bridge over a stream, a park with pond, and a community college with a pond. My raid buddies report that the pier in Marcus Hook, and Penn's Landing, are both heavily populated with 'karp. So look to water for Magikarp, and also hope to get lucky and catch a few Dratini as well - Dratini are often found in the same places as Magikarp.

Thanks! Is there a specific one I should CTM? The only other candidates I have for it currently is a 15/14/12 2408 Rhydon with MS/M.

I wouldn't spend a TM on Rhydon either. Two reasons - first, it's not that hard to evolve another one. Secondly, in Gen4, Rhydon can evolve to Rhyperior (Rhyperion? whatever), and you'll re-randomize the moveset.

Best advice IMO is to save the TM for after Gen3 comes out, or for a Legendary. There will likely be changes, and you might want to use it on six different mon. Know the landscape before using a precious resource. It would be bad to use it on Gyarados DT/O, get Crunch, and then have Crunch get nerfed when Gen3 comes out.

I also live in a low Magikarp biome, and have 4 Gyarados now. One is powered up to level 36 and has DragonTail/HydroPump, and a CP of 3001. The other three have Bite/Crunch (Level 28), DragonTail/Crunch (Level 26), and also DragonTail/HydroPump (red, level 16, just evolved). I'm waiting for Gen3 to do anything with any of them. But if Waterfall comes as a quick move, I could see using some FTMs to get it. DragonTail is an excellent quick attack, but doesn't have STAB, and Gyarados coasting by on high CP in lieu of good attacks with good typing has come to an end with the Legendaries. We'll see what the next gen brings, but expect changes, and some things that no one expected.

Good luck.

Another consideration is that each species has two possible fast moves and three possible charge moves, so a Fast TM will definitely get the move you want, while each Charged TM has only a 50% success rate and you may have to use multiple to get your target charged move.

Raid more, get more TMs and find a Magikarp biome.

I would agree that it's definitely in every trainer's best interests to have at least one HP Gyarados. We don't know what will happen with moves, but it seems likely that it will get waterfall, and there's always a chance they'll make HP legacy. If you can get a hold of a CTM to use, I'd definitely go with the 14/10/14 one - attack is always more important right now.
