Brainwashed by this site

I think too many people got brainwashed by the knowledge in this site (or other sites). For example, the best combination of move sets and etc.

I would say that most of them are wrong. Let's take an example -- Tentacruel.

The site says that the best attack moveset is Poison Jab / Hydro Pump (Rated A) and the worst moveset is Acid / Sludge Wave (Rated D).

However, one of the best usages for Tentacruel is to train the gym, especially against Vaporeon. When fighting against Vaporeon, Sludge Wave is much better than Hydro Pump. Although the cool down time for Poison Jab and Acid are said to be the same, Using Acid is easier to dodge (for mid-level players who dodge reasonable well but not perfect).

In this case, Acid/Sludge wave actually is the best attack move set. Try it yourself. You should be able to easily beat a Vaporeon that has double CP with a Tentacruel.

I wouldn't go THAT far, but I'll grant you that prestiging is the most underappreciated and under-researched aspect of the game on most fan sites. I find the rankings here a pretty good rule-of-thumb for both taking and defending gyms. A lot of 'mons with weird move sets, lower rankings and minimal CP's definitely have a place in the prestige market.

That being said, if you don't already know that a Tentacruel's Hydro Pump is going to be useless against a Vaporeon, best of luck to you. With grass Pokemon pretty easy to obtain, they will always be the Vape-slayers of choice.

In both Seattle and San Francisco, grass Pokemon are difficult to obtain.

Sucks to be you then... try a few Jolteons or, you know, get out and find some grass.

They would get a ton of players complaining if acid/sludge was ranked high. The moveset ranks are great references for players new to the game and have absolutely no idea what's good.

It's up to people to find niche uses on their own and form their own opinions on moves as they learn. Great tip about prestiging vaporeon, will definitely check my tentacruels.

The ratings are just on straight raw damage output. They don't take into account type advantages or dodging or uses for training.

Yes, you can prestige a Gym and for a Tentacruel prestigeing against a Vaperon 2 acid moves are best.

No duh.

But why would I ever do that?

If I am prestiging against a Vaperon its with an Electric, or Grass both of which are much better than a Poison Tentacruel

In theory because of the AI and the fact that I can dodge I can beat anything with anything. It doesn't mean that moveset you like is best at something

I would say that most of them are wrong. Let's take an example -- Tentacruel.
Really?!

Most of the moveset ratings are carefully considered. And your example...man. Lets say it's special.

  1. Tentacruel with Poison Jab/Hydro Pump has the better dps.
  2. Poison is effective against grass and fairy. If you would attack a grass pokemon it will be also effective against you.
  3. Who on earth will fight a Vaporeon with a Tentacruel? Yes, you proved that it worked for that case. But it is not effective at all and will not improve the moveset rating for Acid/Sludge Wave.
  4. Why are Chansey and Wigglytuff not the best attackers in the whole game? They can beat most of the pokemons even with halfed cp. Right! Just not effective.

I apprechiate that you found a pokemon with a suitable moveset to beat a Vaporeon. But you have to rethink about moveset ratings and effectiveness.

I keep hearing Acid is better than Poison Jab. Would you mind explaining please?

The move ratings are a broad generalization. Even poor move sets may have nitch uses. What makes a poor move set is it's uselessness outside the perfect situation.
