How to spend coins
As a free to play player I need some advice on how to spend my coins. I haven't done any evolutions in a long time, but I'm planning on evolving a bunch once the double xp kicks in. I now have 371 coins. I will be getting 50 coins every day, and I have thousands of candies for commons so I don't expect to run out of anything, but I don't have any lucky eggs. The options I see are:
1. Buy lucky eggs and get 4x xp
2. Evolve as I go with no egg for 2x xp
I'm at level 36.5 and I'm not too worried about gaining "empty xp". Also, how much bag space do you guys usually reserve for mass evolves? Any ideas and advice would be great, thanks!

The exact opposite. Unless you get a huge upside from being able to hit breakpoints at the highest levels sooner, in the long run it's better to not focus on leveling since you will accumulate exp and level up over time anyway. There's very little return for it if you spend resources on leveling up faster after 35.
I personally love grinding hard and plan to break my previous record of 1 million exp in a day, but it is for sure not the best way to spend my resources.

I have about 450 if not more Pokémon that are solely for mass evolutions.
I would honestly wait til “the event” comes cause you never know if they’ll add some gift boxes which may include some lucky eggs; or they might put lures and lucky eggs on sale since Lures will be 6 hours a pop plus every bonus we can unlock correlates with Double XP, Lucky Eggs.
After the event ends, focus on using your coins to upgrading both item/Pokémon storage space.
Bag space for sure. Mon storage if you want/need it, although there is a good chance it will be briefly discounted when gen 3 is fully released. I personally prefer to keep my mon count at a manageable number (currently <700), but I agree with you in principle that the permanent upgrades are by far the best value.
Actually maxing out your Item Storage space is the most important aspect of being a free player. It lets you play “freely” as you can hold more items and don’t feel the “necessity” to throw away excess items because you’re running out of space. Usually it’s potions and revives.
Next thing is Pokémon storage. You can easily use 600 storage space on Pidgeys, Rattatas , Sentrets and other easily obtainable “Mass Evolution” Pokémon.
I would not suggest bothering with lucky eggs. At your level the last few levels aren't going to matter all that much as far as pokemon effectiveness goes, and stardust is always the limiting factor for powering up your mons anyway. If you invest in eggs to get 4x experience and reach level 38-40 during the event, you still likely won't be able to power up that many to your max level. You may not be that worried about empty xp, but you will likely always still need to grind to get more stardust.
And with thousands of trash poke candy, you are certainly in a great position to just evolve every common mon you catch during a double xp event and still earn respectable level gains while saving your free coins for more useful things like bag/box upgrades, sale boxes, and (depending on your preferred play style) raid passes or incubators (for more dust).
Thanks for the advice everyone. Item storage is at 550 and I just upped my poke storage to 550 as well. I'm fairly rural, so I rarely fill my item storage and when I do, I've been tossing extra potions (though I've been reconsidering that lately). I do want to add another 50-100 of pokemon storage, but I'm holding out for a sale.
But now that those boxes are up I'm sorely tempted. I may just stock up on incubators for when the double stardust kicks in. We'll see. Thanks for the help everyone!
