Is that a houndoom on the left? Another brilliant choice.

Actually, you could do much worse than houndoom. It resists ice and deals reasonably powerful neutral damage with fire and dark moves.

Dragonite is fine

Dragonite has very high neutral DPS, and DPS is very important in raids.

No, it's double super effective against dragons. That's the joke here.

Had a fellow lvl 40 player in a Lapras raid who told me that Dragonites were very good against Lapras, I disagreed. But did not convince since that Lapras had double water moves.

Next one though, had ice shard/icebeam ........

If I can recall correctly, Dragonite used to be the best Lapras counter back in the days, despite his type disadvantage.

This was before the type advantage update. Anyway, I'm sure it's still a viable choice to put in some damage. However, I'm not sure if this still holds against a raid boss who can kill a Dragonite in a single shot.

Also pretty sure the player who fought the Lapras didn't over think all of above.

Against a water Lapras Boss, Dragonite is certainly excellent. But I had to test one against an ice one, then he is quickly one shooted.

I'd be interested to see what comes up in a water lapras 'autoselect'- it may actually include dragonite but the game seems to favour typing selection over DPS selection.

Then again the chances of a water lapras is 1/6. 1/3 if you just count hydro pump. Most people bet that the pokemon doesn't have a moveset (e.g. betting on Lugia not to have HP or Mewtwo doesn't hv FB and use Ttar), rather than betting the boss has one specific moveset.

After a few times it is rather easy to "guess type" from autoselect. But this incident was in the summer when autoselect still choose Blissey above all. We used to send in a scout to find out if it was a hydropump Lugia or not.
