Depends on how much you like him

Snorlax is only worth powering up as a defender. The best generalist attackers are Dragonite and Tyranitar, followed by Exeggutor and Vaporeon.

I'd add Machamp and Raikou to that list.

Vaporeon is a generalist? No way. Also, it doesn't have a very good attack stat to begin with.

I would only power one up if you have a higher level one and you're a newer player, meaning you're having trouble surviving in gym fights and raids. There are better options, namely to avoid timing-out in battles.

Keeping it under 2000CP can mean it will hold CP longer than a 3000+.

I have started sticking in hatched Snorlax that I never powered up, and they stay in a gym as long as any 2900+ Blissey. I don't miss them from my pack, and they do a good job - with no expense.

Laxes of any CP go down infinitely faster than any Blissey. Recently got into a minor turf war with two players on an opposing team that exclusively placed Blisseys, Laxes, and a couple Wigglytuffs. The Laxes all fell the fastest to my Machamps, took 1/3 of the time of a comparable CP Blissey, though the Laxes with Zen Headbutt dealt more damage than either if the other two species regardless of CP.

I was referring to the natural decay of a pokemon in a gym...not the ease at which it can be defeated by an attacker.

The speed at which a pokemon decays in a gym is based on full CP of the defender.
It is not individual for each type of Pokemon.

A 3k CP anything will fully decay faster than a sub 2k CP anything - which mon it is has nothing to do with it.

Even then, it's not like there's a high chance of most of the chanseys/blisseys the average player will come across will be over 3000 CP without a substantial stardust and candy investment. Banking on players being deterred by higher CP/motivation, and not attempting a battle that showcases the lackluster practical usefulness of a Snorlax vs. a Chansey or Blissey is not a great long term strategy.
Even a Chansey/Blissey that's one defeat away from being knocked off a gym will almost be more trouble/resource draining than a Snorlax of similar max CP that is fully motivated.

Chansey doesn't even reach 1500...so combining the best of both pieces of advice would actually be Chansey - but I had not mentioned Chasey in relation to high CP for that exact reason. I am not sure why suddenly this is becoming a discussion about the best defender.

I was referencing the speed at which a defender decays, and perhaps Blissey should not have been a specific example when talking about higher mons over 3K vs under 2K. Picking Blissey was an irrelevant detail to concentrate on. .

The question posed is in relation to power up said Snorlax.
In relation to the question actually posed, can I assume that you would advise to not power up Snorlax?
As this was what I attempted to say initially.

And for the record, I used Blissey as an example as I do personally have a range (around 3K CP) to choose from when selecting a defender - the example I used was personal experience.

I will say yes. I'm powering up my 100% one regularly. Lick/Hyper Beam is pretty fun to use. I sometimes use him as an anchor in raids if there is 10 or more players so I can survive and still do some damage. However with gen 3 around the corner I'm curious if Snorlax will get some new moves. There is a chance he can be even better.

Since the update negating the loss of damage balls for being knocked out of raid battles, anchors are kind of pointless. I'd say picking a team that does more damage is the best course of action for any raid you're certain has enough people to beat within the time limit.

I have three over 3K from back in the day when they put in great work, but now they are virtually useless unless I need them to help deter attack for a brief period before they tank in motivation. Further, they take more resources to restore after being defeated than alternative defenders, with little extra benefit in return.

I'd love to have that Stardust back now, and wouldn't recommend anyone waste theirs now either.
