Slowbro - defense

I see from the tier list that Slowbro still has a place as a defender (I don't have many strong defenders yet, even at Lvl 29 - wasted too much dust on attackers before they messed with the prestige).

I finally caught one with confusion and psychic, then went to appraise and saw that he was over 80% IV's with perfect attack and stamina. Got all excited, checked its IV's... defense is 7 (taking it down to 82.2% IV's).

Sounds a strange question, but how important is defense on defense?? :-) It took me ages, even in a fairly Slowpoke-heavy area, to evolve a decent Slowbro with Confusion and Psychic. Would you power this one up a bit or wait for another?

CP is 1182, level 17.

Its CP is too low to power it up. Slowpokes shouldn't be that rare, you should be able to find a relative high CP slowpoke and evolve it if you are looking for a Slowbro.

Side note, the combination confusion + physic seems quite rare. None of my +/- 10 Slowbros ever had that moveset.

Thanks man. Yeah Slowpoke isn't rare, but that Slowbro moveset is rare (for me at least). Maybe I'll power up my other defenders first and see if I can get a better defensive (con/psy) Slowbro. I have plenty of candies.

Afaik all movesets have the same propability. In this case, it is one in six, same as dice-roll.

But it is perfectly reasonable, that you don't get your "6" even if you roll your dice ten times.

Do you know if there has been any research on the move sets of Pokemon?

Indeed.

Thank you for sharing the link. Perhaps I was not clear enough in my previous statement. I meant to be referring to move sets of evolved Pokemons.

I have read this research back in the days, but it focuses on Pokemon caught in the wild. I doubt it says anything about evolving move sets. Hope some day there will be a research on this as well.

Maybe this helps:
https://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/evolution-guide

Here you find:

The Pokémon's [...] moves are randomised. The options are selected from a list that is dependent of the kind of Pokémon;

Nothing is said about propabilities, but i don't have a reason to assume, that they are not equally distributed.

Thank you. Different question, what is your own experience on move sets of Pokemon after evolution? Have you noticed an equal chance on all kind of move sets or do you feel like there is a slight biased present towards certain move sets?

I would not power up any defender that is worse than Vaporeon. Just fill theses Gyms with your Vapes if you don't have enough Snorlax, Lapras, Dragonites and Exeggutors (and legacy moveset Omastars) left.

Especially now that we know that Gen 2 is just around the corner I would save my dust (Chansey's evolution Blissey might become a top tier defender for example)

Fair shout. I shockingly only have one Vaporeon and it has an attacking moveset (Hydro Pump). I was just a collector until recently so I only really kept one and I'm way too fussy about evolving so I don't have a good defensive one yet. I'm getting less fussy so next time I catch a half-decent Eevee I'll evolve it and see what I get. Eevee aren't as common for me as they seem to be for most people though, I get millions of Goldeen and Magikarp instead (I've evolved about 6 Gyarados and have enough candies for another one).

it really doesn't matter which evee you evolve, also moveset doesnt matter for vaporeon. my rule is this: I evolve every evee over 650cp so I don't need dust. I don't care about IVs as long as I got a top defender over 2,5k cp and no dust spend. evees are so common, it's hard to fall below 1000 candy. welcome to the meta

With this amount of candy, you can regard eevees as kind of brown rattatas, just using them for lucky-egg-mass-evolution.

Actually, there is a problem with good defenders. You do quite a lot of thinking, reading, invest candy and stardust and build up a perfect Moveset Slowbro.
He will be at about 2100 CP at level 30.

You put him into a gym. Many other players will put defenders, mostly dragonite, vaporeon, exeggutor, gyarados, even flareon, kingler or arcanine.

All these easy-to-counter defenders will sit above your hard to counter but low-cp Slowbro, he will be the first one to be kicked out.

Thats why i have one real good slowbro and two real good poliwrath, and i do not invest any stardust into them.

I don't like this situation and i would really be glad with an hypothetical update, that allows only one defender of each type per gym.

I'd like that kind of update very much as well, that would be really good to have a change in variety of Pokemons in gym.

it is. Indeed. But it is still somehow possible that Poly hits back hard with ice-punch or just spins Exeggutor round with submission.

There are only 2 Defenders with no real type-counter: Snorlax and Lapras. They are - of course - better than poli.

I still max out my poliwrath to sneak past some of the lower level defenders

Disregarding the possibility of generation 2 I think it's worth powering up. "Defense on defense" will make no noticeable difference. It will have low cp, but I rarely see a gym attacked and not taken down fully anyway. On the other hand, I'm sure you've read about the pros of slowbro.

The only thing that would worry me is the generation 2 rumors, but you'll have time to earn more dust while grinding gen 2 anyway. I personally love my slowbro and keep him maxed. You said it took ages and you were excited, I'd say go for it, sometimes you should just do what makes you happy in this game, not what the "smart" thing is.

I've stopped using my slowbros since the nerf, his cp is too low and he often gets placed at the bottom what with people spamming gyardos, rhydon etc. ITs a shame because i invested loads of stardust into 2 confusion/psychic slowbros before the nerf. I'm kinda hoping gen 2 will allow a slowking upgrade even though thats not quite what happens in the game.
